Hunter 466 Marina del Rey
We have a Hunter 466 with davits on the stern. We have a 10' Caribe with center console that weighs, give or take, 4oo#. Well within the range of the davits. We are having a heck of a time getting the dinghy past the ladder extrusions and the hand grips on its way up. It seems to be putting quite a strain on the system. I sit on the tramsom and push the dinghy out with my feet as my husband raises it with the winch, but it seems like we're doing it the hard way. Do any of you have an easier way to raise your dinghy? Maybe with an assist of something like a "shoehorn"? Any of your help or experience would be greatly appreciated by this aging couple....Debbie

I have the same sort of issue with my 44 DS and Hunter davits off the arch. I fairlead the hoisting tackle to the electric winch and just push the button :)

I had the same problem on my H-36 with my Ocean Davits but my davits have telescoping arms to allow the dinghy away from the stern.
But also sounds like you are using a very heavy dinghy and I think you need to use a boat hook or some thing to push your dinghy away from the stern to get past the hump so not to put too much strain on your system.
My dinghy still hits my stern very little but my dinghy with motor and gas tank is way lighter than you have, you need to use a boat hook like you said like a shoe horn type thing to help get it away from the stern and than maybe use the electric winch and not put too much strain on the davits.

We've been using the winch, but the problem is getting the dinghy over the transum. The davits, made by Garhauer are rated for 500# and braced on the side with the engine. I wish they were telescoping, didn't even know it was an option. I guess I'll have to continue to use the leverage of my feet to hold it out. There would be way too much strain to try getting it up without pushing it out.

Contact the Fehrgahers (?, owners of Garhauer). They may be able to fabricate an extension for you that fits their davit. They came up with some innovative, custom stuff for me over the years and the pricing is always fair.

add

Have a stainless welder add some round tubing to get the dinghy out farther away from the stern.

Isn't 400lbs a little heavy? In bigger seas that could be an issue if only rated at 500lbs due to loads caused by movement.

My new davits

Well, I was looking for a project, and I sure got one.
Decided to put Davits on Short Circuit, my Hunter 49
My requirements:
Able to easilly lift 400 lbs
No interference with stern
One person lift & deploy.
No side to side swing while under sail
Fully removable when not in use i.e. winter so that I don't need to modify cover
Didn't want to have to run a bunch of lines to my primary winches for lift.
Lastly, had to look really sharp.

Well, after 2 long months of tool & sweat, I've done it .
Going to be posting a full play by play once all the photos are taken.
Stay tuned.... It's really, really neat

Artboas, Can't wait to see your pictures. Your criteria are ideal. Are you fabricating them yourself? I got in touch with Mark at Garhauer but he hasn't gotten back to me yet. I have a feeling he'll go with the tubing idea to keep it off the swim ladder extrusions. That's my main worry as it can damage the dinghy. Thanks to all for your suggestions.

Basicslly, what I did was way over the top.
It started out as a simple concept and grew.
But, the end results are phenomenal.
When you see the pictures, you'll see.

Got these Saint Croix davits, the top block does not swivel. this keeps the twist out of the block and allows you to pull up a heavy dingy, I have a 20hp electric start Honda with the Saint Croix helm seat. I just have to pull the boat past the transom, no problem. Sorry I don't have pic's with the motor and seat.

What I think I need is something like a shoehorn or roller to get the dinghy past the ladder extrusion and hand grips on the transom.
