I'm in the market as were . Colonial Beach
I have heard of people putting davits on a C30. I just wonder what it will do with the balance of the boat.

there was (is?) a catalina 30 'rubber ducky' that was for sale in huntington, long island a few years ago that had davits on the stern; try to track her down and talk to the owner about his experience. i thought this was a bad idea since if anyone ever needs to come out of the water from overboard this would seem to be a real problem.

I just bought my Catalina 30 in October and it has a different kind of davits that I had never seen before. The "davits" are mounted on the pushpit rails and have a curved part that you hook the tube on one side of the dinghy onto. This supports the weight of the dinghy and then you secure it with the painter and maybe another line. See picture.

Two obvious drawbacks to this are that it blocks the swim ladder, but you would probably drop the dinghy in the water at anchor anyway. It also blocks the stern light, so you couldn't have the dinghy there if sailing at night.

I suspect that I will mainly use the davits as a place to store the dinghy when I'm not using the boat.

The davits Loubert shows in his photo are from Edson but I don't believe they make them anymore. I always thought they were pretty clever but I don't have any experience with them to know their drawbacks.
What marina are you in Loubert?

We're up at Roy's Point Marina. We've been at Redcliff for years until they decided to build the new casino right on top of the marina so we moved at the end of last season.
Just so this doesn't come off as a total hi-jack, here's another idea for towing the dink.

don't minimize getting back on the boat; from what i understand the vast majority of drownings are because people couldn't get back aboard. i have no expertise but the fact that davits are so rare, and so seemingly useful, leads me to guess they're not a good idea.
