davits or towing

We purchased a 8' dingy for our 27'. Just wondering, I have set of davits that I can easily retro fit to her. I was told that this would be to much weight off the rear rails and transom. Dinghy w/o motor is 46lb and 115lb with. Should I get rid of the davits and just tow or install them? Thanks tyeshack.

Since those are now your best two choices, then towing is probably better than having davits on the 27-footer. I wouldn't tow with the engine on unless traveling quiet waters; however, others might in a wider range of conditions. But IMHO, you're over-equipped in dinghy/engine combination for your size of boat. You should have bought a C-200 Zodiac Cadet, or similar, which is about 6.5 ft, and a 2-hp engine to match. That way you could stow them both and assemble the dinghy on your foredeck as needed. The engine you have is HEAVY and will be a pain - - - (you know the rest), to use if taking off/on. Better to ask these kinds of questions b/f a purchase.

I fell into both davits and dingy, both of which together I paid far less then the zodiac you mentioned. I was looking for a 6.5 when I found a very wealthy person "giving" away a never used WM boat (1yr old) and a set of St. Croix davits again 1season old. I do not have a motor yet and guessed a 2 or 4hp would weigh 70lbs.
So let's revise this question. With existing inflatable either with or without a motor, size you recommend, is towing still your best suggestion? Or if I sold the 8.5 and found a 6.5 and bought matching 2 hp motor would it still be to much weight for davits on the 27.
Bottom line I don't wish to pack and unpack a dingy, I just dont have the room.

My motor is a 3.5hp and weighs 41 lbs. My dinghy is a 9' but have had it years before I bought present 250. When I replace the dinghy I will likely buy a 7.5'. I can put 9' dingy inflated on the bow or drag it. Chief

Keep the dinghy, sell the davits, and just get a light outboard. Selecting a 2.5 vs a 3.5 saves no weight as most use the same block for both, so, get the 3.5! Chief

A 6.5' cadet weighs about 26# or a little less; a 2-hp 4-stroke engine probably about 30#; a 3.5 hp up to about 38#. A combination of your WM 8.6 ft dink and a 3.5 hp engine would come out at over 80#, plus the weight of the davits.

I can't advise you on an "acceptable" wt for stern davits + boat & motor on your Cat 27; maybe the other guys here can. Four-strokes are heavy; I once had a C-200 & 2-hp (two stoke) Evinrude that would carry my wife and me to shore & back no problema. The small dink could be stowed and inflated aboard my Pearson 30; could lift the engine with one arm onto the dink, etc. Those days are probably gone forever since one cannot buy new 2-stokes in the US anymore.

Frankly, I'm prejudiced--I don't like davits or the towing of dinks. I like 'em stowed below decks along with the engine if possible; otherwise, with the engine mounted on the stern pulpit. The reason is because I know that if I have to stow 'em, I can stow 'em. But given your choices, I'd rather tow than install davits for 80# of boat plus engine on a 27-ft. Others will see it differently, however. Heck, I still have not come to put davits on my Bavaria 38 even though the admiral brings it up every season along with a request for a hard bottom inflatable. To me, it's not worth having all that stuff on the back of the boat all the time for a few trips to shore each summer, etc. It's unattractive!! On a big boat-say 45 ft or larger, perhaps not; but on smaller boats yes--it looks to me like clutter.

I don't especially like the look either, but weight of combos spoken about in above posts is still less than that of an average man, and yes, it would be out behind the stern, but seems like not much more weight than inviting a friend to sit in the back.

Yes Bob, but way in the back! Compare it to taking the tongue weight off a trailer. Chief
