Davits on smaller boats

What are the smallest cruisers that can effectively mount davits for holding a hard dinghy? Do you have to have a 20,000 lb. displacement boat to do that, or can it be done successfully in a 12,000 lb. boat? I think it is an intriguing question, because a hard dinghy has its advantages if the darn thing didn't have to be towed everywhere.

dingy davits

you might contact the guys at the site listed below. the experts can advise you about displacement etc. I made a set of ss davits for our cat30 and they save alot of hassle not having to tow or drag the boat up on the fordeck. I am sure I gain at least a half to one knot in boat speed by not dragging a dinghy. Strange as it may sound I really notice how much quieter it is when the dinghy is up on davits rather than "chattering" along behind :) your marina may charge more for davit length. I have seen two sailboats in my marina that are about 27-29 ft in length with davits. I use lift an inflatable which weighs about 80 lbs. I mount the outboard on the stern rail. A small hard dinghy shouldn't weigh much more than 80 - 100 lbs.

How Much $$

Tom- How much did it cost you to put davits on your C-30, and are they easily removable when you want to "streamline"? Did you mount them yourself?
