Heading out to the Annapolis Show in October and am going to be looking for a few things in particular. We've spent the summer "shaking down" our new 426DS (henceforth to be known as a "44") in preparation for some extended cruising to begin next year. RETIRING.!!!! We've been extremely happy with the boat overall but are going to focus on two areas in particular; Upgrading to a real good quality mattress in the aft berth. Anyone have any experience or suggestions .?????? Dinghy Davits. Have a 10' Zodiac with an 8hp Merc. Again, anyone have any experience or suggestions.????? As a side question, assuming we find a good mattress. I know a lot of these are the "foldable" type so you can get them down below. Hate to sound stupid but.....how do you get the old one out.????

Great mattress

We purchased a Handcraft mattress 8 years ago and never slept better. A bit pricey but extremely comfortable. They exhibit at the Annapolis boat show. Usually the stock mattresses are thin enough so you can fold them to get it out of the cabin. Have a great time at the show. Please stop by the Hunter exhibit and say hi to the Chesapeake Bay Hunter sailors at the Hunter Sailing Association table.

Latex is also a good alternative.

Frank: Latex makes an excellent alternative to foam or interspring. There are also some other products on the market like Swedish Foam (Tempurpedic) that give good support and last for many years. One advantage of the rubber mattress over an interspring is there are no coils to rust. They also do not absorb moisture and will not mold or mildew (the rubber that is).

Check Local

We did not follow through because we sold the boat but were surprised to discover a small matress manufacturer in Ventura CA. He custom made all kinds at significantly reduced prices. We were referred to him by a boat broker who had a list of satisfied customers. It is worth a look in the yellow pages for your area.

Davits

The 44 DS that was going to the Newport boat show had intergrated davits on the arch. It is the same boat you own, but has an arch modification with the davits built in and the bimini attached to the arch, much more secure and a very clean design. I assume you could purchase this arch and replace the one on your boat - not sure the cost - but I am tempted to do it to my DS if it is a possibility. Take a look at the boat show - they may have this on the 44 there. If not they may have a picture of this arrangement. It was being tested during the dealer meeting in august at Mystic CT.

Davits

Frank, I bought Ocean Marine system for my H410 at Annapolis two years ago. They spend a great deal on time and effort keeping up with the Hunter models. Been very hapy with the product. Check the attached link Bryce S/V Spellbinder H410

Ditto Bryce,,

Also put Ocean Marine System davits on my 420, 3 seasons ago.... Been very happy ... davits held dingy securely in an off-shore gale; they do the job. Buck s/v "L'Attitude"

Davit and Mattresses

I put Ocean Marine davits on my P42 this spring and have nothing but good things to say about the quality of the davits and the mounting system. The P42 has a unique stern rail and Ocean Marine was completely knowledgable about what mounting pieces were needed. We had a foam mattress which was too thin and too soft. We checked around and found that Mattress Factor Warehouse in Columbus would make a custom inner spring mattress for around $500. They started with a queen mattress set of springs and modified it to fit the unique shape of the aft cabin bunk in the P42 (including putting in the U shaped indent to go around the rudder post). We gave them the foam mattress to use as a pattern They put in the folding point so that I could shoehorn it through the companionway. It is thick, about 12 inches, and extremely comfortable.
