I just installed a set of davits on our 356. They are made by Ocean Marine Systems. They were easy to install. Dinghy is rock solid no movement at all. I am very pleased with the quality and ease of installation, only had to drill 4 small holes.

From the palm trees in the background that boat looks like it should be in the water. The davits look great!

Shippy, I would suggest you contact the owner Mike Thomas at,
http://www.oceanmarinesystems.com/pricelist.html he has the best customer support you will find.

He puts the davits together based on the weight of your dinghy, if you will add a solar panel etc.

The davits came with a well written installation manual.

On the 356 you do have to remove the liner for the propane locker to reach the bolt at the bottom of the davits. A very easy job. We found the rubber seals in the liner for the propane hose and wire were both dried up and could not possibly have provided a seal, so both were replaced. Also we changed the propane tanks to two 10 lb fiberglass tanks from the 4.5 lb steel ones.

Mike even asked what side the dinghy transom will be on and used a 6:1 tackle on that davit to handle the extra weight if keeping the outboard motor on, and just a 4:1 for the bow of dinghy. We also got the cam cleats for the tackle lines, makes it so easy to haul it up.

He also needs measurements of the inside of the dinghy to make a lifting harness to fit inside the dinghy.

Mike does a great job and knows Hunter sailboats, he goes to the factory for each new model to design a davit system for that boat, so you can be sure it will fit properly and not damage the stern rail.

The dinghy sits really high at the back of the boat. I find it makes a handy storage spot for boat hooks, fenders etc. while underway :) I will post a picture of it tomorrow from the cockpit so you can see how high it sits, the bottom of the dinghy is above the stern light.

I am just a satisfied customer, no affiliation with this company, Bob

(if you have any specific questions please send me a PM)

Go to Jim Seaman's web site and he shows a good job of him doing the whole install aand alot more install's on his 356.
I got a used set of Ocean Marine Davits from another Hunter owner who added a permanet arch on his Hunter and did not need them any more but any way Ocean Marine was very helpful with my question's and extra parts that I needed.

with it mounted so high have you not had any problems with 'windage' if you get caught out in a blow? Our 356 hulls have so much freeboard as it is, I just wondered if this adds to that problem or not.

It must add to the windage but I have not noticed it yet, but have not been out in a bad blow either so maybe that is to come.

The davit manufacturer does not recommend using the davits for open ocean sailing, I don't think any manufacturer does.

The high mount does mean you can lower the helm seat as you wish and get yourself down on the swim platform with the dinghy in "position". Also a visitor can come on board without having to lower the dinghy. If the dinghy were mounted lower you could not do either of these.

I think I will still add a new stern light on the top of the bimini or arch because the stern light is a bit shielded by the dinghy above it.

I did not use the same mounting position for the bottom of the davits as Jim Seamans did on Java. The base of his davits sit on the top surface of the sugar scoop, beside the pumpout cap. Ours are mounted on the vertical surface of the sugar scoop. Probably our davits are a few inches lower than Jim's for that reason.
