My depth sounder will occassionaly change readings from 20 ft or 30ft to 2.5 or 3.0 anyone know why. My owners manual does not address this??

Erratic depth

Ron, My S200DL was doing the same thing, I had it repaired a couple of times it finially crapped out. Sometimes it reads 560 sometimes 1888 sometimes nothing. Now nothing I guess it is time to upgrade to new technology. Good luck, I hope you find some resolution. Bill

Only Guessing

I have a Ratheon Fish Finder which will occasionally do the same thing. I can't remember the model number but is something like a 365L. I can change frequencies and it sometimes helps. What I think happends is that due to the particular wave length and frequency, the transducer sometimes believes a wave which has rebounded from 200 feet is one which was transmitted more recently. In other words it loses track of when a wave it received was transmitted.

I think its air

I think air under the boat does it to mine. usually its choppy and if a bubble gets under the transducer it would not read properly.

Datamarine

My Datamarine Depth Sounder also shows some shallow depths now and then, but always returns to the correct depth. I assume the reason is that I'm passing over some underwater object or animal that is reflecting the signal back. Perhaps that is what is happening with your unit?

Mine went crazy when

The through-hull transducer started to go. It took about three seasons for it to fail altogether but when it did I had to replace the transducer. Cost about $110 plus shipping and the techs checked out the instrument at the helm for nothing. End of story: Changed the transducer and it reads like new. Data Marine is out of business but if you search on data marine on a search engine it will take you to the company which services the instruments. They even have the round plastic covers. Mike

another theory

Seems like they all go crazy occasionally. I have 2 on my boat and they both do it. I think it is caused a lot of times by reading returns from other boats sounders in the area. Seems like it happens a lot when I am passing nearby fishing boats in particular. Anybody else notice this?
