I'd like to add that the staff was very helpful with orders made during the transition.

Scott,
Your comments reminded me to mention mine was a debit card also. The bank said that most of these problems all involve debit cards and very rare is the problem with a credit card. Mine was a debit card also. I have now switched to a credit card and save the debit card for cash at atms.

Got a "separate" credit card and insisted on a very low (few hundred dollar) limit. Have been using it for on-line purchase for years. The card has on-line access therefore I can check frequently before the statement arrives.

NEVER use debit card. You are on your own.

Even the ATM card is linked to a separate saving account with just spending money.

It's dangerous out there my friend.

That may explain how my America Express was compromised at the end of February. American Express caught it on the first day it happened and only 5 charges were authorized before they cancelled the card. I called all the merchants involved and cancelled the orders (all but one had already cancelled it as suspicious). They were all being shipped to an address in San Antonio.

Perhaps this is why my credit card was "dented" at around 0600 on Saturday, Feb 25th, in Houston TX. Card was cancelled immediately by me and the bank is doing their thing. It pays to check your online stuff daily!

Hey Phil & Bly

Hang in there. You guys did nothing wrong - as attested to by so many who have made purchases from this site. We all appreciate knowing where our cards were compromised.

I have no complaint with Sailboatowners.com. It is always good to share info as I have been trying to figure this out for a while. When the orders were placed, the computer IP addresses came back from Texas and Japan and shipped to Florida.

Kudos, Phil...

For going the extra mile to protect our SBO customer data.

Had to make security data changes to my on-line banking account this very morning after being notified of two unsuccessful attempts to access my account.

The bad guys seem to never sleep...

As an afterthought, when setting up your security questions, avoid any that have an answer that could be found in public records (place of birth, father's middle name, etc.). With all the access to ancestorial records and social media, try to use questions that only you can answer.

Thanks Phil for the info. Now I know why my AMEX card was hit with online charges from a store in Phoenix late Feb. AMEX caught the transaction and put a hold on my card. Going forward, is there anyway you could have provided an earlier notice to customers?

Good Job!

-I measure a company not by the problems they encounter, but how they handle them when they occur.

everyone has problems, but not everyone handles them well.

These kinds of things happen. It is the same thing as if you have a large amount of cash on you and someone attempts to rob you. The big difference is that the banks can do more to help you recover or not even take a loss.

These are hard times and hard times brings out the hard crooks. Chances are that these foreign hackers will not be caught and have to face their deeds. Still, what goes around comes around!

Well stated MrBill. SBO has just proven beyond any doubt that this site has integrity. That is something many companies sadly lack. Keep up the great work.

The advise given about checking statements is sound. Many folks I know personally never open them, just shred and toss without looking at them.

need to spread the word...

Phil,

You have assumed that all who subscribe to the forums read this forum. For many years the only forum I routinely read was "Ask an O'Day Owner". And I read it before I joined in commenting.

I have made this observation before, just ask Scott.

When sending a message to all hands, you need to send to all forums.

Not necessarily as a post for return comments, but say read the post open for comment at "Ask All Sailors".

Remember than many are limited by interest and time.

FYI - Just got a call from my Credit Card Company (the one I used at the SBO Store) that I had unauthorized charges on the account. Not certain if this was related to your Data Breach but it is a coincidence. Thanks for letting us know.

Stu,

Many do not want to view all! They are just interested in their boat and that forum didicated to it 90% of the time.

Whereas they might have interested in this specific post.

And for that matter I do not regularly read and post here.

Phil posted a general message. But good customer service would have seen that all who follow any of the specific owners or interest forums should be told of the subject. Note that I said 'all'.

Phil, Scot and others have dismissed my points in the past. Sometimes it is like hollaring into empty water barrell on an ancient ship...

Thank you for your comments.

...back to Ed

I understand. But what I've learned is that boat systems are not necessarily specific to one particular boat, like, for instance, electrical systems and engines. Many, many boats have our M25 engines, like O'Days, and I've learned a lot from reading all the posts. I do agree that that notice could have been placed on ALL of the boards, but, boy, it sure was nice to have posted it at all. Thanks again to Phil and crew.

I agree

Stu, txtowman, and all,

I agree that Phil, Scott, Maine Sail, do good jobs.

However, it is easy to not see the trees when you are in a forest. That is they need to have comments and praise both. Many of us know of Phil's biases and sometimes those seep thru.

Over the last few years where others post references to off site places to make purchases, I have been heard to say check this site. The few shekels that Phil makes keeps this place going.

Those giving and getting advice need to keep that thought in mind.

On the otherhand, comments need to made.

Ed K
