Gosh, they beat California to the no-copper gate. I wonder who the crash test dummies get to be. I read the entire report on non-toxic bottom paints, and they still have not come up with anything close to the multi-year experience we get from Trinidad et al in SoCal. And, they require stripping the copper paint off, which, of course will cost plenty of haz - waste $$$ to dispose. Love it.

Stripping off the copper bottom paint prior to painting with the new "eco friendly" paints is similar to the issues with abestos. If they would have just sealed it over the stuff would have been fine. But they (Fed & States) decided that it needed to be removed and disposed of for costs in the millions of dollars and it served no practial purpose other than for the EPA and other authorities to flex their authority.

That's not the case. Asbestos is inert, doesn't react with the environment, and its hazard goes to zero if it can be sealed up permanently and prevented from shooting dust into the air or getting into water. (Obviously, not good to eat or drink it either)

Bottom paint (and scraped residue) will react with the environment, the copper and other harmful compounds can leach out. So it really needs to be treated as a toxic waste, like any toxic paint residue.

If it is sealed by the new paint what is the issue. I doubt that there is going to be enough copper left after 3 or 4 years to make any difference even if it is leaching. This is why we need to have the bottoms repainted isn't it?

It is sort of amazing to me that the copper is safe one day and then it is toxic the next!

It's hard to determine the difference between good environmental practices vs the desire of the state to control whatever it can. I propose that most environmental initiatives are mearly anti-capitalist, anti-wealth measures designed to move control into government hands.

Well I just don't see any problem here. We all know all of us real sailors are part of the elite upper crust. We will just all go out and buy us a boat over 70 feet, and let the riff raff deal with the regulations.

Next step, the state will demand that we strip out all the copper pipes from our home and give it to the government. They can then sell it to China and solve the national debt.

can't wait for the unintended consequences.

My prediction is that the epa will approve some alternative that will get used for 10 or 20 years before we find out it is much worse then the copper it replaced. Just like the MTBE the epa mandated for gas that destroyed well water

Ah.You're right, I was only talking about the waste issue. If the new bottom coat's good enough, I can't see any reason why that wouldn't be a good transition step. The hull scrapings would still classify as toxic, though, when that hull gets redone.

What if you have a lead keel and have to scrape all the copper bottom paint of it as well?

OMG! We're all haz-mat sites! I wonder if we can get "Superfund" clean-up dollars from the EPA?
