Danforth Compass Repair

I have a 5" Danforth Constelation binacle mounted compass I need to have repaired and serviced. The two companies I've come across are Viking Instruments and Andrews Compass Service. Has anyone had any experience with them, good or bad? Anyone else I need to know about?

I have had great service from Viking.

You didn't say what is wrong with it, but I've had a few with a bubble in the glass. Simple job to replace the diaphragm and refill with mineral spirits, at least those that I worked on.

My Ritchie compass needed same, ordered diaphragm and new seals from the manufacturer, and used a headlamp polishing kit on the acrylic cover, filled, froze, filled, and tightened it up with the seal screw and all was well.

Easy-peasy.

If you watch much "How It's Made" they have an episode showing the production of one of Ritchie's fancy compasses.

I just got my compass back from Viking Instruments. They appear to have done a great job.
