In the v-berth I have long had the egg carton-like foam under my mattresses. Probably nine years now and I have never had the problem. I have seen it in Bed, Bath & Beyond for example. I cut it to shape in two sections. This because I often lift one side or the other to get into a locker.

Interestingly I have never noticed the problem in the quarterberth. Just one large mattress on heavy plywood over the fuel tank. And no foam.

We use Dri-Dek squares and it works amazingly well..

On some boats there may be a leak but with foam on solid wood or fiberglass your own body moisture can't evaporate out of the foam without circulation..

PK, there is a product made for that purpose. I thought Sailrite had it, but i don't see it in the catalog. Might be one of those little ads in the back of the magazines. Camping suppy might have it.

While there are boat (read that expen$ive) products, here's what works for us.

We use those cleanable air conditioner filters under the vee berth. The ones that look like pressed together plastic fibers. The only downside is they tend to "shed" a bit, but not that much.

The HyperVent works well from our experience. Don't know about the Dry Bunk.

I am sure that there are other products that will work well for this purpose. It would probably be good to throughly clean these areas with bleach product on a regular basis. When you are going to be away for a period of time, you can lift the cushions so air circulates around this area too.

The key to eliminating dampness is ventilation. However you get it you must have it.

I also like Dri-dek. I installed it in my V-berth last season and it made a huge difference.

We live on our boat and have used Dri-Dek squares for several years. There will always be some condensation below the mattress, and the Dri-Dek keeps your mattress from coming in contact with the moisture.

I think Hypervent is amazing and not very expensive. It was $35 to do the forepeak in my 30. Had the product for 5 years. It does not flatten over time. Bunk is always dry.

One of the products mentioned by members is the same as the spun AC Filter material sold at Home Depot. I got enough to do the V and the aft birth for $70. It looks as if it should do the trick. Thanks for all the posts.
