My O'Day 322 has a wing keel. I was diving the boat the other day and noticed the aft, top section of the keel had a 1 1/2" square cut-out. I'm not sure how it was damaged, but do you think this will dramatically reduce the keels structural integrity?

Colleen, Have you grounded the boat?
If you have met terra firma with any speed, that could have caused compression damage at the back of the keel. The next question was how fast were you going and did the boat stop or did it skid to a stop? If you were moving even 1 knot and grounded with an abrupt stop, there could be alot of damage. I would access your keel bolts and verify all is well there. Then again this is my assumption. I did ground her
I did ground it about a month ago. I probably hit at about 3 kts. We came to an abrupt stop and actually remained stuck for a few minutes until a friendly boater towed us off. The bottom we hit was a sand bottom. How bad do you think it is?

You mentioned the spot is in the top of the keel? It may be a casting flaw in the keel. My 89 shows a couple of dipples and dings in the casting. Being in the top part of the wing I question weather a grounding would do that type of damage. I agree with R.W. that you need to check the keel bolts and make sure you don't have water entering. Next time you dive see if the keel is covered with fiberglass, this could also be what is damaged, I have seen this on later model 322's. Good luck and let us know if you find anything else jeff

Colleen, Could you dive on the keel
again and look at the surrounding hull. Look for cracks in the hull. Are you taking on any water since the grounding? Is there any hull damage near the piece that is missing? If the answers to any of these questions is yes, I would have a professional look at it. That might require hauling out. good luck, r.w.landau
