Damaged Bobstay

Well the storm of the century just blew through southeastern Michigan yesterday (well maybe I'm exagerating!). But we did clock 95mph winds in certain areas. I just launched the boat the day before and had planned on going down to check her out when I got the call from the marina. My tie up job wasn't good enough and my 1986 Catalina 30 Tall Rig was slamming around in the slip! My beautiful new rubrail job is now for nought but I have a bigger problem... Apparently the bobstay was getting slammed into the metal seawall and it suffered some pretty severe damage. I would say about 1/3 to 1/2 of the strands are broken near about the middle of stay. My questions are: 1. Where does one find a replacement bobstay? 2. How difficult of a job is the replacement? Will I have to loosen the entire rig? 3. I know its an important part of the rig as it ofsets the load on the forestay but can I sail the boat at all? Would light air sailing be a bad idea with only 2/3 to 1/2 of the tensile strenght available? Thanks in advance! Steve

Steve, I would take a spare halyard and secure it to one of the bow cleats as a safety measure. Loosen the backstay, and take the bobstay off. Any competant rigging company can duplicate it. I would NOT go sailing with it the way it is. Having your rig go over the side would not be a fun thing. Another alternative is to call Catalina parts dept and have them ship you a replacement.

Bob stay

I got one from Catalina Direct. Reasonably priced and got it in a week. Make sure you make an accurate measurement on length and clevis pin size before ordering.
