How did your marina fare?

Anyone know if SeaView harbor in long port survived?

Here are some pics from Farley. They kept us amazingly informed with emails and pictures. The marina fared well. All boats floating, some minor damage to some boats and the facility.

The bar pics are from Laguna in Brigantine. Sad...one of our favorite places.

There's a pic of the "devastating" damage to the boardwalk in AC and of the area in question before the storm. The pic is an example of what most of this section looked like. The media loves talking about how "devastating" it was but they fail to say that this part had been crumbling for decades and was not even usable. They've been promising to tear it down anyway. There's so much real stories out there so why do they have to make stuff up??! While one of our local channels had 3 "on the scene" reports about a tree that fell on a car and the horn that wouldn't shut off, Tom's River/Brick Twp was looking for EMS/Fire/Polce assets for over 20 structures burning and missing people. Not a word about that. I guess it's more frustrating when you are involved in it and then after seeing the reports wonder if you were even there!!! Sorry for the rant!

Hope everyone is ok!!!! Anyone hear about conditions at Viking??? I'm stuck inland working.

Q: why does media exaggerate weather?

A: News is a FOR PROFIT BUSINESS. ratings are $$$$
never forget that when you read, hear or see stories in the media....

I've asked this directly to reporters, and they say that is Journalism. like they were taught that is fine in school.

Glad most are OK, but please remember, this was not the big one...

It's funny you mention that. CBS3 had a reporter from Miami flown in to help with coverage. Ironically, he was in New Gretna, where my boat is sitting on the hard so I was interested in his report. One of the anchors asked him how this compared to others he's reported on in Miami and he, paused (looked like he stifled a chuckle), and proceeded to list the ones he was in since 2003 (including Katrina and Rita) then said "well, the wind is different."

Deauville Inn, Strathmere and Rod and Reel, Brigantine. 2 of my favorite places on Earth.

And apparently Godzilla made an appearance during the storm. Some of the photoshop images were so good that they showed up on the NJ County OEM website (Statue of Liberty one).

Other than charlie '04 (west coast. port charlotte), we have not had a 'big one' since 92 with Andrew.

you know its a big one, because nobody has a mailbox.

IMHO, over 130mph, (cat3) the wind lifts things and throws them. that's when anyone without shutters gets the window broken, then the pressure lifts the roof. next you have wet carpet, wet beds, leaves, trash, and a real mess in your house.

that changes everything, when you don't have a dry bed to sleep in. people change, and survival mentality sets in. -That is when it can get ugly.

-This is my concern, just like Irene, or Wilma, even Katrina people had lots of trees down, lost power, and struggled a little. THey think they know what to expect.

remember katrina was 'only' flooding. Everyone still had mailboxes.

if this had been a cat3, or 4, it would be on 5x as bad...

(-think about blown out windows in manhattan)

I disagree, this was the big one for the Northeast. I rode out Charley at ground zero, Punta Gorda saw the wind damage. Spent 2 weeks without power or water and backed up sewage systems. It was bad but we had no storm surge. The tons of sand that moved in the 24 hours of this storm and the size of the storm that hit a basically unprepared area is far worse. We had building codes in place here in Florida that afforded a basic level of protection. The tick tacky stick build homes in the coastal areas were just asking for it. Many looked like converted vacation bungalows. 1000's maybe 10's of thousands will end up homeless after everything is inspected and people discovered what the storm surge has done. A house can look fine only to discover it moved on the foundation and must be torn down. Sure higher winds could have done more damage but it is the surge that causes total destruction.

I feel very bad for the people who need to live there and try to go on. I hope they have good flood insurance and are good advocates for themselves because you are big news now but in 2 weeks your are old news. Also as I write this I can bet the low life "contractors" are flooding the area to begin to rip people off. Recovery will be long slow and painful. As a survivor I wish you well.

This storm was moderately powerful and very big. Many hurricanes have been more powerful but they were much smaller. This storm didn't follow the coast and hit Maryland and then New Jersey and then NYC and Connecticut. It came straight in from the east and hit them all at one time. Most damaging in New Jersey but very damaging in Rhode Island and Maryland and then in Ohio and Pennsylvania. We had 70 mph gusts in Washington DC at the same time as they were being hammered in NYC.

my cousin, phyllis schuyler beals, lost her boat--it vanished without a trace-- she was in a morgan area(????) marina, where she said was much much damage, and she is stilnot allowed into the area.
she sent me this message, after i discovered her boat was a walkabout---
Hi Karen, wish I knew what happened, yes maybe she's landed atop a building somewhere. Some boats landed atop railroad bridges. I think I brought this on by renaming her. Original name was Heelin Laddie. 10 years no name. Last spring we painted Serenity Now astern (Seinfeld favorite of our family) & now she may lie at the bottom for all I know... My marina living pal (Ruben) continued to look for her. He will be doing diving salvage work also & says he will keep looking... I felt last night as if I didn't deserve to have a boat nor did I take my responsibilities seriously enough. Not much sleep. Ironically 5 vessels that rode out the storm on their moorings came through unscathed. Me I put her by marina up
A sheltered creek area & with the full moon tide, 12 foot storm surge & 70-100 mph gusts it added up to disaster. Feel for the folks without homes though. Maybe next year is a break year from owning a sailboat- regroup & kayak or sailing canoe! Love ya,
Schuyler
boat name: serenity now
please keep watch for her...

Sorry, its bad, but could be a LOT worse. This was a wake up call, sure there's lots of damage, but nobody has broken windows, and wet beds. like I said over 130mph, things change drastically. I saw Charlie's damage on the east coast, and had no idea it hit as a cat 4. on the east coast side (vero/daytona) it looked like cat1. -on the frame houses, I saw some cbs 1st floors and frame uppers. In many cases the only thing left on the 2nd floor was the toilet and bathtub. This was not the big one. its a wake up call on what can happen in a big one. Best wishes to all, and please and stay safe.

Zee, contact boats us, and towboats, most likely they will handle the salavage. What we saw was barges with cranes. picking up sunk boats, and placing them on a barge. (sometimes a spare barge for the salvage boats). Their methods didn't minimize damage to the boats, but was focused on cleaning up asap. best of luck!
