Hello everyone, How does the Polyester double braid low stretch Dacron rigging line , compare to the Polyester low stretch XLS Samsom line? Will the Dacron last, is this good line for the everyday cruiser.?Thanks, chet
material in one case you have a brand name and in the other case you are looking at a construction method. Do a web search and see what you can learnabout line/rope construction and the materials used. The two choices that you refer to may be the same or they may be a bit different.
identical. Samson is a brand name. Low stretch tells me the non sampson is still a higher quality product. If you buy generic line, look at the spools it comes on. New England Ropes is good. A reputable supplier may have high quality line from a maker we never heard of. Ask questions. We usually use bigger line on sheets than we need for ease of handling anyway, so this is probably not a safety issue. A softer feel is one thing you get by spending more on Dacron braided line.
Samson XLS....Samson is the brand/manufacturer and the XLS is the'miodel' name, so to speak. It is a double braided polyester line. The % of stretch and strength can be found under each manufacturers websites. Most manufacturers specs are relatively close together. There are some real good looking 'look alikes' that are total junk and are sold in discount houses and lumber yards. The best deals can be had on e-bay. I used to sell rope so I am somewhat familiar. Most rope sold on e-bay is at an exceptionally small mark-up and most also give you one end spliced. Double braided polyester is the recommended line for halyards and sheets. If you are a seriouly competitive racer, there are other alternatives.
