I am in the D.C. Area for a couple of months. I am wondering if there are any generous D.C. sailors that need crew on the weekends. Today (Friday) it is 75 deg and there is a light wind. It seems like a great day to go sailing. Shane grasshopp@juno.com

You know you may have hit on a good idea

Sorry, I'm from Maine but you know, wouldn't it be nice if fellow sailors could do just what you've suggested. Quite often a spouse is not as interested in sailing as their husbands are. If a fellow sailor were in the area I think it would be fun to sail with him for a few hours, swap stories, show him the sights, talk about boats and meet some of the people who have posted messages on this site. I guess there would have to be a registry or something so sailors on this site could get together with other sailors on this site and do something like this. Anybody else have any suggestions?

Suggestion for local sailing

Here's a thought: I also ride a motorcycle and follow a very active motorcycling bboard. Along with the usual forum topics there are a group of geographically based forums so you can post a note to see who in the area wants to ride on a particular day or meet somewhere. If people wanted to look for boats, crew, or rafting locations, it would be a convenient way to do it. Harry Bethesda, MD Hunter 456 - "Czech Mate" harry@greenspun.com

Pick-up races

I am told there are races using the fleets at the Washington Sailing Marina (in Alexandria). Its the group that teaches and socializes on Flying Scotts (?) and has friendly races on a week night; they pick up crew if not full. Shouldn't be too hard to find a contact number for more specific info. There are also Frostbites and Wed nite races in Annapolis. You might contact someone thru the yacht clubs, specific class websites, or general crewlist sites. There is also the singles boat group if that fits your description. Pick up a free copy of Noreaster, Spinsheet or other local magazine at a boat store and make contact.

Spinsheet

Spinsheet also has a website. Near the top, click Go Sailing. Then click Crew Listings. There you will find people with boats all over the Chesapeake Bay that are looking for crew for racing, cruising, daysails, etc. You can also add your name to the list of people that want to be crew. Belle Haven Marina

When I lived in the DC area I used to sail out of Belle Haven quite a bit. The last time I was in town (about two years ago) they were still there, but that's no guarantee they're there now. They were on the GW Parkway just south of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge. Try the Northern Virginia Yellow Pages or directory assistance. They had a fleet of Flying Scots for rent on a per hour or per day basis. Scots are FUN boats for daysailing and big enough to comfortably hold six adults. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

That was before Isabel

Belle Haven area had extensive damage to the residential community in hurricane Isabel just before winter set in, so its unlikely the waterfront activites have recovered. Better check with them first.
