Anyone out there traveled from New Bedford Harbor/Bay to Cutty Hunk Island? I know it's not a long distance however I'm interested in how long it took, how you navigated this short journey and what side of the island should I approach. Any info. appreciated, thank you.

Cuttyhunk Approach

I believe that the proper approach to Cuttyhunk (proper spelling) from NB would be to keep Penikese Island to starboard and then site on the R/G Middle Ground buoy between Penikese and Cuttyhunk. Approach keeping the red buoys to starboard (this is critical) until you reach the Cutthyhunk channel to the pond. If you can grab a mooring inside the pond then do so since it's much better protected and a shorter ride to shore. Otherwise grab a mooring in the outer harbor. Have fun there.

If you can time your trip to have a North East, or North West wind when you leave New Bedford it'll make the trip go alot smoother and faster. As you'll find out our prevailing wind is from the southwest, and Cuttyhunk is southwest of us. Normally the Northly winds are short lived and the winds normally clock back around to the southwest within a day or two. This'll keep you from having to beat all the way to Cuttyhunk. By the way your 25 looks good.

To Scott:

Thanks Scott, we Hunters have to stick together, by the way I saw your Hunter photo. My boat was a restoration project, took me 18 months and is still a work in progress to some degree. I was amazed, the bilge is bone dry! Thought I would sink her! C U around. Mark

Made the trip August 22, 2004

Mark, I made the trip last year from Fairhaven to Cuttyhunk in my O'Day 23. Went for an afternoon sail - the wind was 5 to 10 knots southwesterly and we departed Faihaven at 3:30 pm. We were having a great sail and decided to go the whole way - We moored in Cuttyhunk at 7:00 pm and had a sandwich and then at 7:45 pm started the trip back to Fairhaven. On the return trip the wind died and we motored for part of the way - Wilkes Ledge G-7 to R-8. Then the wind came up and we killed the motor and sailed home. Arrived at the mooring in Fairhaven, between the coastguard auxillary docks and Pope's Island Marine, at 2:00 am. The route to Cuttyhunk and home was almost identical and my handheld GPS showed that the distance was 14.2 n-miles each way - a total of 28.4 n-miles. I downloaded portions of the chart and marked my route. If you send me your e-mail I can send you the file - It is a .pdf file and is slightly larger than 1 meg.
