Cutting one piece stanchions

Has anyone cut their one piece stanchions to make them removable. I have a '78 Oday 30 with one piece stanchions and I would like to be able to remove them in the fall to tarp the boat, but removing the bases every year, leaving the holes through the winter and rebedding it would be a pain, especially with the limited access. I was thinking of cutting them a few inches from the base and using a sleeve or an insert to rejoin them. Possbly a recessed set screw to hold them in place.
Has anyone done this?

My O'Day 222 has these detachable stanchions that came stock and believe me, it makes a big difference when I'm able to remove them in the fall to cover my boat. The pipe on mine are threaded for a small set screw. A friend of mine has a sloop with stanchions similar to yours except that they also have extra brace supports on them. If you are able to cut them and add an 1-1/8" sleeve with a set screw, I would go for it rather than dislturb the stanchion bases every year. My bases are good as they have wire braces on either side so I will have to cut above these, approx 4" . This is why I think an insert would be better. I would get more material inside the tube and I could extend it up quite a bit. Anybody know what the ID of the Oday stanchions might be?

I checked the ID measurement of my stanchion base and it looks like 1-1/16" or 3/32". It's hard to get an accurate measurement without a proper measuring device.
