Hi all I am in the middle of a major refit and have been woundering what people are installing for cutless bearings? I have upgrade from an MD7A to a brand new Beta14 and I am looking at the shaft, prop and bearings. I have some good ideas for the stern seals but it gets vague when I start asking about the prop end of the shaft. I understand that there will be lots of opinions about this but I am interested in what has been done? Anyone?

My question is how the hell do you get the old cutlass bearing out?The advice I've had is to keep the oversized shaft size and use the original, replacing it with the original versus a smaller standard diameter shaft.~ Pete

My cutlass bearing housing I had been bored out to accept a 1inch insert, I then pressed in the new BF Goodrich bearing.Sent from my iPad

Hi Howard, I now have shiva in my driveway in Soldotna AK ready for repair over the winter. That thing about the cutlass bearing being over-sized is good info to have. I would love to have more info such as that. You can reach me thru this forum if you like. Cheers amigo.

Although a bit tedious, I've removed cutlass bearings by using a hacksaw blade to cut it in two places, 180 degrees apart, and prying the pieces out with s screwdriver... crude but effective. The other method I've used: -Measure the length of the old bearing-Find a socket or short piece of pipe/tubing that has a slightly smaller outside diameter than the bearing outside diameter, but too thick to slide through the hole in the bearing.-Run a longish piece of 1/2" threaded rod through the socket or pipe/tube & add a washer and nut to the end of the rod.-Poke the threaded rod down the shaft hole from inside the boat with the nut going in last.-Get a piece of pipe/tubing about 1" longer than the bearing (previously measured) with an inside diameter slightly bigger than the outside diameter of the bearing, so that it fits over the end of the bearing.-Put a small piece of steel plate with a 1/2"+ hole drilled in it over the protruding rod and add a nut. (A washer might do the trick but I found a piece of 1/4" plate worked better.)-Hand tighten the nut on the outside, making sure everything is in good alignment. -Use a wrench to wind the nut and force the old bearing to slide out out.-Take care that the pipe pushing against the hull doesn't do any damage. Maybe an extra washer would help here. The picture below is Sin Tacha's new bearing, for a 1" shaft from the Yanmar 2GMF.Hope this helps!

I had a Yanmar 2GMF in Sin Tacha, with a 1" shaft. Johnson Cutless Naval Brass Sleeve Bearings was my choice for a bearing replacement.I used the #870252100 "BACK" bearing, and had to cut a bit off the length to make it fit. They show 6 different thicknesses for 1" shafts, and several thicknesses for most other sizes.Peter.

Barb, That should work. I do have an 11:45 with Blundell but I don't imagine it running past 1PM and although they never get you n on time I'm confident that it will be over by 1.
