Cutless bearing

I am being told that my rudder will have to be dropped to remove the cutlass bearing and the rudder shaft will need to be repacked. Has any found a simpler way to replace the cutlass bearing on a H 33.5?

Tool

I have heard and even think I saw a tool that replaces the bearing
with out removing the shaft and think I saw at the boat yard haul
out the boat owner had a guy that does it and the owner said it was worth the money rather than taking all other things off.
I forget but they said the shaft only goes back as far as the rudder
just so the bearing can slip off and on the shaft.
Hopefully some one else can jump in with more info.

Did mine several years ago on my H35. Removed prop and set screws in cutlass strut holding bearing. Soaked bearing by wrapping the whole fitting area in cloth and repeated soaking in PB Blaster over several day period. They used a section of rigid tubing (maybe heavy pvc or metal) and slowly tapped the bearing out over shaft where prop was. Reverse to install new.

changing cutless bearing

There is a commercially available tool called the strut-pro. I have an older boat (1991 model) with 5000 engine hours and 50,000 miles under the keel. I have seen boatyards really pound on the cutless bearing with sling-hammers and am afraid of what that would do to my transmission. So I bought the strut-pro parts (just purchasing the componenets I needed) for about $300. It uses the same technique as a propeller remover and places no stress on the transmission. strut-pro.com.

good luck,
Paul

Your boatyard does not have a cutlass bearing press tool...?? Probably not a very qualified yard. This is a 30 minute job with the proper tools and there is no excuse for a boat yard not having these tools whether hydraulic or a Strut-Pro.

Tool

Try asking the local boat yard if a out side contractor does this kind
of work and a few years back when in the yard doing bottom paint
the boat next to me had a special outside contractor do the cutless
bearing with the special tool and was not at the yard when it was finished.
I did not need to remove my rudder after changing the cutless bearing
following Main sail's web site on how to DIY and worked like butter out with
the old and in with the new and did put the new bearing in the freezer at home
and packed in ice until installing it as Main sail's web page helped me and first
time I ever did one and went like a dream for sure.:dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance::dance
Thank You Main Sail for all your great helpful info on so many boat projects.

I was fortunate to have access to a machine shop and made my own tool to remove and install cutlass bearing without that rudder or shaft out. Works like a charm. You're welcome to use info to make your own.

Thanks everyone for the information the yard does have the bearing extractor tool but the mechanic said the tool does not work well on the 1" ID and 1 1/4" OD bearing and sometimes causes damage during the extraction. They have a machine shop adjacent to the yard so I will see if he can help. I do not want drop the rudder to get the shaft out unless I have to .

Bruce, I cannot see any reason why those diameters are any different that the 1.25" and 1.50" sizes. It may be that the yard's sleeves or colletts are worn out. You can purchase those individual items pretty inexpensively from strut-pro. Just a thought.
