When I pulled the boat this fall, I found that the cutless bearing was halfway out of the retainer and resting against the prop (the prop is about 3" from the end of the bearing housing). I also noticed that the bearing housing is constructed of fiberglass and that the grub screws that lock the bearing in place were stripped allowing the bearing to turn in the housing and slide out.

Has anyone had some experience with this situation?

I have replaced the bearing (it was easy to fit the bearing into the housing sugesting that the housing is worn; however, it is a snug fit). I have also drilled and tapped 3 new holes for grub screws but I do not want to tighten them too much as they may strip in the fiberglass. The screws stand a little proud of the housing and I plan to add a stainless steel hose clamp over the screws to hold them in place and keep some additional pressure on the bearing.

Appreciate any comments or suggestons you may have.

Charlie
