I will be hauling out in a two weeks and I want to write [ie speak]to someone that might have replaced a cutlass bushing in the past. I can tell you that at this point I have no reason to believe I need to replace this bushing. Is there a way for me to determine if this bushing is wearing out? I understand that if the prop is loose or frozen this must be done.Today the prop spinns under power and there is no screaching. There seams to be no vibration coming from the prop.It seems I wont know until I see the bushing. If you have replaced one I sure would appreicate any advise on getting this out.If the shaft is frozen on the bushing it seems cutting the shaft and beating it out might be the way to go? is this what you may have done? if not please let me know. she is coming out over the three day week end so I'm investagating now. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME AND ADVISE JAKE L.

cutless

Hi Jake The cutless is not a bad job.but you need to go easey. If your motor runs smooth your bearing is ok If there is anty play it needs to be changed. I found the motor runs ok with a little space around the shaft but the stuffing box starts to leak more often and needs adjustment sooner so the rubber bushing should hold the shaft tight. To remove the shaft you must first spray with WD40 and let sit. Then remove wire keeper on lock bolts and remove lock bolts, back off on packing nut, removebolts in trans coupler then i bought new bolts hardened steel for coupler 11/2" longer.use a socket3/4"and place it between the coupler and trans then tighten the bolts and push the shaft out.If it wont come off tap with a brass hammer .clean shaft and lube with lanolin slide shaft out with prop on and clean the end good so the coupler slides on with a tap .The bearing gets cut off with a hacksaw thru the hole Iuse two cuts then punch out the two parts.Clean thehole out .I used a brake cilinder hone on a drill.then lube the parts and pull the cutless in the strut with a 3/4" threaded rod with bolts and nuts.more lanalin on the bearing for lub .and slide it back in I changed my packing and hose at the same time my shaft was groved when it came out so Iused the WM green clay packing it keep the bilge dry.I allso added a ruber vibration damper between the shaft coupler and trans. The yard wanted 1200 bucks and they where going to cut the shaft off and buy a new one with the coupler .I saved som bucks.makesure you get the set screw back in the holes John \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ LGNY

Cutless

Although I have not done this job myself, I've seen the yard do mine. They left the shaft in place, pulled the prop and then used a hydrallic (sp) tool to push out the cutless and also to press in a new one. I've also heard of DIY who use a small length of PVC pipe to hammer out the cutless, also leaving in the shaft. Sounds simpler than taking the shaft out. I don't know why anyone whould want to cut the shaft. Good luck. Paul
