Cutlass Bearing

I need to replace the cutlass bearing on a 1994 Hunter 29.5 (no strut, in hull type). I've already removed the shaft coupling and saved the shaft from having to be cut.

Two problems I face -- does the rudder need to be dropped to remove the shaft? (The boat is in a cradle with 20" of clearance from the rudder to the ground. Is there any free play in the rudder and/or shaft that would allow them to pass each other?)

And how do you extract the cutlass bearing? Where are the set screws? Is the bearing glassed in? And will it have to be cut out?

Replacing Cutlass Bearing

Sorry, I'm not much help. I have the same year 29.5 as you. I had to have mine replaced two years ago after an accident but I just paid a pro to do it. I wasn't there when he did the job but I don't think he had to cut it out and I don't think it was glassed in. I can look up the charge for the job if you would like. I would like to hear how it goes for you if you DIY. Good luck!
