I need to replace the cutlass bearing on a 1994 Hunter 29.5 (no strut, in hull type). I've already removed the shaft coupling and saved the shaft from having to be cut.
Two problems I face -- does the rudder need to be dropped to remove the shaft? (The boat is in a cradle with 20" of clearance from the rudder to the ground. Is there any free play in the rudder and/or shaft that would allow them to pass each other?)
And how do you extract the cutlass bearing? Where are the set screws? Is the bearing glassed in? And will it have to be cut out?
