Is haulout usually required to replace cutlass bearing? I was told mine has some wear.

Number 1...

Yes, a haulout is required...Number 2, I would rather have a root canal before I replace my cutlass bearing again (just did it after my fall haulout). I had to pull the shaft, the shaft cracked (which I replaced for about 300.00), then, I had to hacksaw the old bearing out, THEN, I had to force the new bearing into the strut with a C-Clamp (and lost about 20% of the bearing which I hacksawed off), THEN I had to put the new (stainless) shaft in. I still haven't been able to get the packing on, and hook up the shaft to the engine. Oh, and, by the way, your probably going to need to drop the rudder to do all of this. All this started because I needed to do some glass work on my rudder. I'm about halfway done with the rudder, but, I'm more worried about getting all of the shaft parts to fit correctly. Through all of this, I ended up (and I'm still extremely embarrassed about this) breaking my hand, due to the "difficulty" of the job. (I got upset and punched my boat...the boat fared much better than I did). Bottom line...GOOD LUCK!!!
