I have a 1992 Hunter 28 that needs the cutlass bearing replaced. Has anyone removed the cutlass bearing without removing the prop shaft? It appears like the rudder must be dropped in order to get the shaft out and I don't think I'm up to the task. While I'm on the subject, it there a good (accurate) way to tell if the prop shaft is bent with the shaft still installed in the boat?

Can you give some details?

Craig, When you say you removed the bolts from the trans, which ones do you mean? How did you get the shaft past the rudder?

Do not remove the shaft.

Steve: You may be better off having this done in a yard. It is usually about 1-2 hours labor. They have a tool to push the bearing out of the strut. The bearing is about $50-60 plus the labor charge.

If you've been getting a lot of shimmy, that's one indicator. However, shimmy can also result from misalignment. As to replacement, shafts come in two flavors: easy to pull and impossible. Judging from the traffic I've read on this site for years, impossible reigns. Get the yard to do it, and do it right.
