Cutlass Bearing - how long

Was up at the boat checking tarps over the weekend, getting anxious for the ice to melt. :cussing:

Noticed the cutlass bearing had a real bad squeek while turning the shaft. I noticed a low rpm squeek at the end of season last year as well.

Boats been in the water 7 seasons and has approx. 450 hours. Is it due for a new cutlass bearing or ??

there is no real set time length to replace them. Grab the prop nut and push straight up, is there any movement? next grab the shaft just forward of the strut if you can and push sideways, if there is any moment it is time to replace. After 7 years you are likely due to replace and they tend to dry out when the boat is out of the water for the winter.

Spray some water and turn. Squeak should go away. Dont worry if there is no sideway movement. It squeak when dry.

Sounds about right..... no play in the shaft, but pulled out of the water for 6 months every year, so most likely rubber dried out and causing the squeaks.

+3, when the rubber is old and not flexible its time to replace
