I have a knocking sound when my motor is at full power, this problem started after I had a line catch in my prop, must have moved the motor/shaft alinement. How do I change the cutlas? Does anyone know? Should I hire a pro to realine the motor/shaft? Any help out there? Thanks, Mark S

Bent shaft.

Mark: I bet you have bent the shaft. You may have also bent the strut too. You will need to pull the boat anyway, so you can see what damage was done. My yard where I have work done has quoted me $100/ft for a new shaft (don't know if that was installed or not). Then you may just as well put in a new cutlass (est $50) and you may also need a new strut if it cannot be straightened. Doubt that you need a engine alignment but it is possible. If you need to pay for the boat to lay in the yard while you do this you might just as well pay them to do the entire job. As least you have someone to blame it on if THEY do not do it correctly.

I'd check first...

they have a piece of equipment that will check to see if the shaft is bent without removing it from the boat. The cutless bearing can also be checked without removing the bearing itself. My guess would be the prop or engine alignment. I'd be surprised if the shaft or strut were bent as a result of wrapping a line around the prop.

Fishing Line will do it

As simple as fishing line is, it will rip a cutless bearing apart.

Or could it be?

Do you have a folding prop? It could be the fishing line is just keeping the prop from unfolding all the way on one side, being unbalanced, & hence bad vibrations.

Send a diver down to look at it before pulling the boat. You may save some money. Sure hope it is a simple problem with a simple solution.

Pulling the Cutlass Bearing

We replaced the cutlass bearing last year and we had the yard do it. Endless Summer is a 1983 h31 and I am certain that the cutlass bearing had been in there since 1983. The set screws that hold it in place were gone and the cutlass bearing refused to budge. The yard had a special hydraulic press made for the job. It came out after being hydraulically persuaded. I'd have a diver take a look. He could also pull your prop so you could have it checked at your local prop shop. The engine alignment is no biggie if you are mechanically inclined, but it can be time consuming and frustrating. If these remedies don't fix it, then it's time to pull the boat and have the shaft trued, propeller checked and replace the cutlass bearing. You do know that you don't adjust the diesel when it's on the hard, right? The hull gets flexed out of shape when it's blocked up. We were able to pull our shaft w/o removing the rudder. You have to remove the prop and swing the rudder until there is clearance. Good trouble shooting.
