When I bought my 94 C30 last year it came with 110 and 155 furling head sails. I used the 110 last season but it's beat and needs to be replaced. The 155 is in good shape but I'm afraid it's too big. The consensus on this site seems to be that a 135 is the best choice for a furling head sail. Does it make sense to spend $875 to cut the 155 down to 135 or should I buy a new 135? North Sails quoted me about $3000 for a new 135.

Jesus that's crazy. Go to CaralinaDirect.com. $1400 and they are made for the Catalina 30.

Yes, you could find lots better prices by shopping around. sailwarehouse.com
for example.

The largest issue with new sails is:

cost = remote seller

service = local loft, maybe higher cost

Good luck, the 135 is just right.

Yeah.......and if you look a little closer you'll find that North Sails has a discount division selling stock sails for your boat.... NorthSailsDirect a roller furling 135 for $1,275.

Re: Cut down a 155

Check this site or go to JSI in ST Petersburg FL they make the sails for Catalina Got a 125 for mine for about $1200 They did a great job.

Also check with a couple of other sail makers and see what they would charge to cut down that sail.

Thanks for all the input. Catalina Direct has a 135 with 6.53 oz dacron and foam luff tape. North Sails has a 135 with 8.0 oz cloth and no tape. Both have uv covers and are close in price. Which is more beneficial, heavier cloth or foam luff tape?

Heavier cloth in light air will be harder to fill the sail. The CatalinaDirect is an offshore sail and should be hardy enough.

By the time I got final costs on cutting my 150 down to 125 it made more sense to but new. (May still have it cut down for a storm jib or stay sail). The new sail from a local loft (Doyle) came in at under $2000. That includes them taking measurements on the boat, minor modifications to custom fit, installation and a test sail ..... and I'll get to watch them build it :)
