I would try to build a pop top because that way you can leave the mast step where it is since the drop in headroom starts at the mast support post and goes forward into the v berth. Unless you rip the foredeck off and raise it too you really gain no headroom. The area of the over the center sole is the only real area you gain any headroom. The pop top option allows you to lower it for vision, inclement weather etc. like sail handling with a firm foot area. Also you dont have to hack at the mast at all and all the current standing rigging is still usable at no cost. The construction of the pop top should be easy and you can use the existing tracks and hatch at no real cost.

Jack, I don't know what the deck looks like that supports a pop top. I guess it would have to be reinforced some way and is it wider that my old style boats hatchway?
I think my idea of using SS post on bimini connectors would work and shouldn't be to much to put up and down. connecting those to the top will need some study needs to be strong and stable to ride out a blow.
thanks James

I like your original idea. If you shorten the mast you can keep all your standing rigging the same because they don't come down on the raised area. You just have to be precise on your measurements and factory shrouds and stays will work. Lots of cruising boats have huge amounts of freeboard so I don't think the additional windage will have a huge effect. Take it with a grain of salt though as I bought a c22 at auction in San Diego and did a 24 hour round trip with a used bass boat trailer from phoenix to pick it up. It was in the water on a moring ball and it was being sold by an auction company so I had no idea what keel was on the boat and had to fabricate the trailer at the public boat ramp on Coronado Island. Think about how nice it will be going forward with the grab handles being 20" higher? I look forward to seeing what you do.

Thanks for the first encouraging words... I was beginning to think I was way off at lest now I don't feel like I alone out here.
