Custom Stainless Arch

I would like to put a custom stainless arch similar to the one on the 290 on my '96 29.5 to support the traveller and radar mast. To get adequate clearance I think I need to raise the boom attachment about a foot up the mast, grind a new sail slug insertion slot, reduce mast rake a little, and have a loft take about a foot off the top of my main. The lost sail area doesn't worry me much because I am almost always reefed when sailing in the Bay. Should I do this? Is there any reason why I shouldn't? Phillip Coker Silent Dancer San Francisco

Trade it

A boat that new! I wouldn't, it will affect re-sale. Trade it for the boat you want, or sell it and buy the one you want.

I'd have to agree w/Jim.

Phillip: I think I'd have to agree with Jim. By the time you spend the money on the arch and the new hardware you may be money ahead by just trading up to a new model. I don't think the raising of the boom in the bay area would be much of a minus except on the light air days (couple of days a month, haha). But if someone would be interested in your boat and another one that was stock, I'd bet you would loose out. I would price out the mods and see what you total outlay would be. You may also have to do some reinforcement of the deck area where you would make the attachment too. I am guessing that the total to do this is going to be in the $2500-4000 price range and you will probably devalue the boat by about the same amount on resale.

Good advice but ...

the 290 has a smaller galley and a less roomy salon which are the two main reasons why I bought a 29.5 instead. Now, nearing the end of my second season with her, I want the arch as well. I know that the mod will be expensive, possibly as high as $4000. My greatest concern is with relocating the boom attachment because I don't know if the mast has the same strength a foot higher. Has anyone ever repositioned this attachment?

Okay, if you don't want a 290......

then look at a bigger boat with ALL the amities. Still do not think modifying a boat this much is a good idea.

Check With Hunter

First they could probably give you an answer as to whether the loading on the end of the boom would be detrimental ( I suspect it would not) and if they OK, ask if one of the production arches would work on your boat. They may be able to provide one cheaper. I think trading would end up costing you more money since going to the 290 would give you a smaller boat and cost you more money and going up in size would also cost you more money. If you want to keep the boat I would go for it. By the way, other sailboats, overseas, are starting to use arches for solar panels etc and it won't be long until they will configure them like Hunters. I wouldn't worry about the resale.

Cut the sails

Have you thought of re-cutting the sails so that the boom is still on the same place on the mast, but shorter from head to clew? This may be much less expensive and still raise the aft end of the boom allowing for clearance over the arch. My bimini rubs the boom so the dealer installed a flattening reef. This helps the boom clear the bimini in light air.
