Custom Mattress

The "Dream Boat" thread had me looking at lots of dreams. I notice that newer and more expensive boats are using coil spring mattresses. My wife says if we move up she would like one. For those of you sleeping on a coil spring mattress, are they worth the extra cost? They sure look a lot more comfortable.

On my boat, I cut a 3" foam mattress pad I bought at BJ's Wholesale to fit. It made an amazing difference but now, 3 seasons later, it's getting a little firm. It's gotten pretty heavy to move around too. I'm sure it wasn't intended for marine use.

There is probably a mattress factory nearby you, Bob. you can take your dimensions to them and they'll custom make ya one that has coils for not a lot of dollars..

Have you actually done this, or do you know someone who has been able to have a factory make a custom mattress for reasonable dollars? The last time I checked at a boat show in the late 1990's, the only company I could find wanted the best part of $3000 for a custom mattress.

I would love to have a real mattress but I can't fit $3K into my boat budget.

Couldn't help it

Stay away from the memory foam mattress, we had one and it didn't help my memory one bit. We have a coil and it's worth it.

I would highly recommend a latex mattress. Nothing to wear out or rust. It should last you as long as the fiberglass.

Two years ago we bought a custom spring mattress for our boat. We sleep on our boat every weekend during the summer as well as about 3.5 weeks of extended trips. Company was Portland boat mattress and cost around 1,200 for a queen. Well worth it based on how we use the boat. Water proof bottom quality mattress

We have a spring mattress for our forward boat and we love it. It makes a big difference. We have been talking about maybe getting a new mattress before we go cruising. It's getting near 14 years old now a and we have slept on it more nights then the bed at our house over the last 3 years.

There is a company in Gardner Mass that makes custom mattresses. I think it is called something simple like Gardner Mattress. Might be worth talking to them.

we have 3 inch nova foam and its at least 3-4 years old (its a 'new one" that replaced a queen with a king and then cut it) and it is so so comfortable. We have a really dry boat so maybe that is one reason its done so well. I have no interest in changing it ever. Maybe with a bigger boat with more space surrounding the bed, but not on a 30.

Rich, I had a couple of mattresses made for some bunks I bought several years ago. I used a little local factory and they were happy to provide the matresses to my dimensions . They had many options that they could build in, and they were about the same price as a standard mattress. I used these guys: http://www.istroumamattressfactory.com/
but I'm sure most cities have a local place that would work with you for less than the big names.
