I'm wanting to have a "real" mattress for the aft cabin of my 1999 Hunter 380 and I'm looking for some recommendations/warnings about companies that make them from people that actually have had one made. If you'd rather do this off-list, e-mail me at ernierogers@cebridge.net. Thanks Ernie Rogers h380 Good Timin' Kemah, Texas

Buy from Hunter

I have a 376 which uses the idenical aft cabin moulding as the 380. I made a dimensioned drawing if you need one. The original foam mattress went soft so I ordered an interior sprung unit from Hunter. This is slightly thicker than the original fit and gas proved most successful and comfortable this last couple of years - not cheap though.

HMC

I bit the bullet and got one for my 40.5 from the Handcraft Mattress Company. I had tried their product at several boat shows and it seemed to be one of the best available. They came out to the boat to measure, and delivered the finished product, an interspring mattress with a pillowtop. I even had a custom fitted mattress cover and two fitted bottom sheets made. Customer service was great, and although their product is not cheap, it was worth the money.

Economic Solution to Uncomfortable Berths

I bought a 3" thick - 4 pound memory foam mattress topper from Overstock.com for around $130. I placed it on top of the existing cushions. It sleeps wonderfully. I ordered another for the v-berth and cut it to fit using an electric carving knife. Very easy. All complaints from the first mate have ceased. Here's the web address.

Currently have a 2" memory foam topper

Thanks for the great replies! I currently have a 2" memory foam topper and it helps a lot, but it doesn't solve the varying thickness problem. On my boat anyhow, the sweep of the far aft hull pushes the far aft corner of the cushion up, making it uncomfortable. I am hoping that a custom mattress will address this by tapering that corner somewhat. Regarding cost, can either of you two guys give me an approximate "boat buck" range?

Not Cheap

Like I said the mattress was not cheap It cost around $2100 + tax (the Governator has to get his share) for everything, but the basic mattress with the topper alone was around $1800. Keep in mind that the aft cabin on a 40.5 has a mattress that is larger then a queen size bed, and we went almost top of the line. The rest of the cost was for the mattress pad, custom sheets, and I also had a hinge installed so I could fold open the mattress and get to the storage below. The hinge is great, and can not be felt when you are laying on the bed. Like I said, it was not cheap, but I sleep better on the boat now then I do in bed at home. And the other half agreed that this was one of the best purchases that we made for the boat. I've tried the other options, and never had much success, and I have found that as I get older, my back gets less forgiving. HMC also makes mattresses from foam, and they are also pretty good and cost less. Fortunately for us, the West Coast manufacturing facility was nearby, and we got to try them all. But they also have booths at all the large boat shows.
