I was wondering has anyone replaced all the interior cushions on an H31? I am thinking it is time. Mine are warn stained and the cushions are all flat and out of shape. What I am looking for is an estimated price to replace all the cushions including the foam. Thanks Paul

Cushions replaced

Paul, I replaced mine about five years ago. (Before and after pictures can be viewed at the link below.) I shopped around for a fabric I liked, and stumbled across a pattern I like, and it was half-price too boot. The fabric is 100% cotton, and had a nice hefty weight to it. I wasn't sure how cotton would hold up, but it's done well. Where I sit most all the time, I have covered with a towel, because it's easier to wash the towel than the cushion covers. I overbought on the fabric, because I wanted to ensure I'd have plenty to make any replacements that may be needed in the future. Also, as my mother pointed out, if you get fabric with a lined pattern on it, you must overbuy as you'll have a greater waste factor when you try to line the pattern up so the seat and backrest cushions match where they come together. Also, it doesn't appear in these photos, but I later had matching curtains made from this same fabric, and this was a very nice touch. I'd highly recommend the use of heavy-duty blackout cloth on the curtain backs, as it prevents the sun from shining through the material, keeps them from fading and and mold doesn't grow on the backside if this material is there I believe I paid about $80-$100 for nearly a bolt of the fabric. I should have purchased closed-cell foam, but it was so expensive compared to regular foam that I went cheap here. The cheaper foam works, but doesn't offer anywheres near the support closed cell-foam offers. I got my mother to sew the cushions, so I can't offer any insight into the cost of labor. I didn't bother making a new cover for the V-berth cushion as this is usually covered with sheets anyway. Hope this helps, Scott Fraser s/v Rubicon Key West

The floor

Hi I saw the floor repair and wondered how it come up. Also can you access the space between the hull and liner after taking the floor up? Your help would be appreciated. Keith

U.S. Yacht Cushions

Call U.S. Yacht Cushions: They have your pattern and are very helpful. I got a quote from them prior to having my cushions on my 1983 H31 done by a local marine upholsterer for about $1500. About 50% of the foam was replaced. The fabric is all Sunbrella. Good Luck! US Yacht Cushions (727) 528-9644 4055 35th St N, St Petersburg, FL Greg W.

I received a quote last year from U.S. Yacht Cushions in St. Petersburg, Fl for $1280.00 base price plus 19 yards of fabric. For about $1500.00 you can do the hole boat. They have all of the patterns for the H31. Good Luck, Andy

New cushions

I'm getting new cushions made by a woman in Gulfport,MS and she's doing it for a great price. The most expensive thing was the memory foam that I added for added comfort. She's doing a great job, she used the old cushions for patterns and is abot to finish. She has the industrial sewing machine and she can redo couches and chairs also. If you'd like I can put you in touch with her.

US Yacht Cushions

Paul: I would highly recommend US Yacht Cushions too. They do excellent work and can add some custom features if you like. You can save some money by driving up to their location to pick up the finished products too.

New Cushions from Little Joe's

I had new interior cushions made in Nov 2005 for our H31 1987. Little Joe's Fabric Shop in Pearl, MS (Jackson, MS) the cost for all interior cushions was $500.00. They still look just like new. The inside foam was in good shape so we did not have to replace them. The fabric was sunbrella (Blue). Joe's place mostly does car seat reupholster and excellent work. Labor is probably cheap since he works his friends and relatives from south of the boarder. Try a local fabric shop and give them the the old cushion material for a pattern. You will get good quality work and probaly for much less.

H31_83-87 Cushions

U.S. Yacht Cushions, St Petersburg has the patterns. For my 1987 model, they made all new covers in Sunbrella, foam was in good shape, only needed to replace one. Cost was about $700.00, worth every penney. They fit and look great. However they did not use a heavy thread with the Sunbrella, I had to get a friend of mine with a canvas sewing machine to restitch a seam a busted getting one cover on. I am sure they will last 20 more years, but if you get Sunbrella, insist on the heavy thread. bill

New Cushions

I used a fellow referred to me by the owner of the canvas shop that did my bimini last season. He had worked for a time at the shop before opening his own upholstery business. He does all types of upholstery including boats. He made 2 trips to the boat, about 90 minutes from his place; one to measure, bring fabric samples, and pick up all of the cushions and another to deliver the finished work and check on the fit etc. We got a heavy stain guard type of fabric, new vinyl and foam for the bottoms of the seats and bunks. The seat backs were fine. Total for everything...$2580.00

Don't get shanghai'd by a non-boat shop.

Paul: Jeff's post made me think about some of the things that you need to consider. 1. Difference in the foam used to sleep on vs sitting on. 2. Vinyl backing on bottoms (especially if they sit on fiberglass). 3. NO metal zippers (they rust in the marine environment). 4. Good quality snaps etc so they don't rust. Sunbrella makes very nice fabrics (not canvas) that are used for the interior. These fabrics are made to with stand the sun. House hold fabrics quite often contain cotton which will not hold up to the sun. Check out the ability to rub on the fabric without signs of wear. The bottom line is to get an high grade fabric from someone that knows what it takes to make cushions that will last as long or longer than the OEM stuff. Spend a couple of bucks extra and you will not need to do it again soon.

Let's face it $$$$ matter

I ordered new cushions for the vee berth today. I decide to boost the comfort level and am going with 5" thick closed cell foam. Yes you have to have vinyl backed cushions because the fiberglass sweats too much. I also like to put a moisture barrier cloth between the cushions and the fiberglass. I think west marine sells it.
