Hi
Does anyone have experience with Micro fiber Suede on the cabin Cushions? We are thinking of reupholstering them and think the Ultra Suede or Micro fiber suede would look good we just wonder about water spots and cleaning them. Any comments or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

Keith

Keith,
I visited them three years ago and had them make a full set of covers for my 1979 Hunter 30. They did an oustanding job at a price that a retired sailor could afford.

Coincidently, I had a set of cushions made in micro suede for my den and even though I spill coffee and soda on them, they wipe clean with a damp sponge. My admiral says they are machine washable with woolite and cold water on the delicate cycle.

After a few years of lite to medium use, the Ultra Suede material on our cushions began "pilling". We consulted with a marine upholstery shop in Annapolis and got an education. There is a term in fabrics called "double rubs". Sit down equals one rub, get up is the second. Ultra Suede is rated at 40,000 double rubs. Ultra leather, 200,000! Something to consider.

So let's say you sit in any given spot 10 times a day. That's 4000 days of use or almost 11 years if you are on the boat every day. I think 100 days per year aboard is a good average(high for my area). That's 40 years. I can live with that.

So why did yours start pilling so soon?

So you're saying I can tell my wife if I don't get up from the couch I can extend the life of the sofa?
Yeah, she'll buy that.

Thanks for all the comments anyone with more input on water marks, or stain issues would also be welcome. Because I am still not sure if you sit on them with a wet suite if that would water mark them.
thank again
Keith

We have an ultrasuede couch in a medium brown at home and have had it for about five years. The only stain so far is tree sap from the christmas tree (it was also treated with a stain resistant spray by the manufacturer as well). I could perhaps try to remove it with a solvent, but haven't tried anything agressive yet as it is a prominent location. The biggest problem has been that the last three years it has had a lot of direct sunlight (it is in a room with floor with lots of windows with no protection to UV and has faded dramatically). Based on that, I might still consider putting it in my boat, but I'd probably shop around for something more UV resistant and stick to a lighter color as it has proved far more stain resistant than UV resistant.
