;D Just purchased a 1976 San Juan 24 for $1250. Think I got a good deal. Boat appears solid, has decent sails, a running 4 hp engine. Questions? What is the most cost effective way to get cushions made? What should cushions cost for the interior? What would I expect to pay to move it (fixed keel) about 100 miles? What works best to clean the mildew on walls? How to you clean the hull below the water line? Thanks

Congratulations on your new boat

1. What is the most cost effective way to get cushions made? We've found that local makers seem to get good results, or you could make them yourselves. With your boat no longer being manufactured, that's about your only choice. Catalinas have a choice of local, the factory or homemade. 2. What should cushions cost for the interior? It really depends on what you want. Costs vary between whether or not you need or want new foam and the covering material being used. 3. What would I expect to pay to move it (fixed keel) about 100 miles? A case of beer if you have a friend with a trailer and truck, much more professionally. Ask around your area or use local magazines or the Internet under boat movers. 4. What works best to clean the mildew on walls? Bleach (small amount in water) works well, along with other environmentally safe materials. Ventilation is a must-do, so if your boat is all cooped up and there's nowhere or no way for air to flow through when you've closed the hatch and locked the hatchboards, it'll come back. 5. How to you clean the hull below the water line? Taking the boat out of the water. :) I suggest you get a West Marine catalog and read their Advisor columns (also available online) for starters, lotsa good information there.

Some info and more info

Make your own cushions. Deffinately the cheapest. I made mine for my Pearson 28 and they are still in use today by the current owner. Cost hard to estimate. How many cushions? How big? What type of material? Some can cost $3.00/yd, others $12.00. I would stay with conventional open cell foam unless this will be the last boat you will buy. Mildew can be easily cleaned with a water/bleech mixture. Spray it on and let it sit a few minutes, scrub if necessary then rinse. Make sure it is well ventilated though. Clean the hull below the waterline is tricky. On/off works well. Is it just dirty from fresh water or is it covered in barnacles? A power washer also makes this chore easier. Moving it can be costly. I would use the money you saved on the boat to buy a trailer. Moving it 100 miles will be in the hundreds. You will have to pay for 200 miles because the truck needs to get home. Where is Chandlers Landing?

Cushions

If you have existing cushion use the old foam and add 1" closed cell foam. You will still get a nice cush from the old foam but still get support from the closed cell. They can be laminated with 3M adhesive spray. Save and reuse old zippers. Found some nice quality canvass material at Joanne's for $7/yd. Tested last three weeks, and it does not fade in direct sunlight. Find yourself a seamstress, cheaper than an upholstery guy. Frank

Call, Robert Cummings

at Cummings Marine in Rowlett. He'll move it for you. Have cushions made from a upholsterer, you'll never regret it. Go with a sunbrella fabric. Good luck with your new boat. 50/ 50 mixture of bleach and water spray and allow to sit for a few minutes. Wash away mold and mildew. wet/dry vacuume and allow to dry throughly. Keep well vented, use a fan to circulate the air in the cabin. Pressure wash the outside throughly. Keep it up, Ctskip

thanks

Thanks - I see you are local. Is your boat also at Chandlers Landing? Is so - I'd like to show you my boat some time and get some tips. Greg

Cushions

Good Old Boat had an article about cutting plywood for the bottoms of the cushions and stapling the material to it. Seemed like a great idea as getting them done proffesionally is going to cost about $200 per cushion.

I had thought about that

Glad to know it has been done before. I thought about doing just what you mentioned, Doug. Not as light and you couldn't toss the cushions around, but talk about easier to make.
