On my 1987 Hunter 31, there are pegs with white plastic caps sticking out from around the four corners of each porthole. I have never seen curtains on this boat but I have to believe these pegs have something to do with curtains. If you know how this is supposed to work, I would appreciate you passing along your insight. Thank you.

I have the original curtains in my 285 and they use the pegs you describe. The curtains have wooden dowels sewn across the tops and bottoms for shape. There are loops at the top for hanging and a longer set of loops at the bottom for securing the curtains in an open or closed position. Each side of the bottom actually has two loops. One is close to the curtain for the down position, and the other is at the end of a couple inches of cord to adjust the curtain in various up positions. Try to get a look at a similar Hunter close to home to see what I mean.

Doug: The curtains are from a company in Ma. called Ship Shades. 800/866-1948 They run from about $29-36 each. They have held up on our H'31 for 15 years. Someone get the hook for Steve Dion!! Steve, you've sunk to new depths of bad comebacks!!! Doug, I took the curtains off our 31 a couple years ago when we had new cushions made. Considered getting curtains made to match, but found that we really didn't need them that much. We only occasionally use marinas or raft overnight and, to be honest, I was tired of spending $$ on the boat! At the time I did check the web site Steve listed and they can make replacements and the cost isn't really all that much. I was just being cheap. Haven't regretted not having curtains though. We just sold TIDE and the new owners may do so. If they do, I'll let you know what it winds up costing them. Good luck! Tim Leighton

If you do decide to get curtains made or to make them yourself, look into adding an opaque liner to the curtains. We had ours re-done and the liner really cuts down on both the amount of light and the amount of heat that comes into the boat through the windows and port lights. A good thing here on the Gulf coast during the dog days of summer... Joe S/V Charis

First Mate, (Admiral!) Made Ours
Our '88 28.5 had the same thing. We actually had the original curtains and, yes, the elastics were stretched and the light curtains faded and worn. My wife and I went to the local fabric store, bought some high-quality stiff fabric in a complimentary color (deep rose to pull out the highlights in the cushions) and she did a wonderful job of sewing not only the new curtains and adding new, heavier-duty elastics, but also sewed a new curtain for the V-berth. She (the boat) looks as good as new and quite spiffy.

Then we would bring it home and try to sew on her old machine. After we had decided that the machine would not sew this heavy duty material, she would bitch about the G.D. sewing machine does not work properly. We would then need to go to the sewing machine shop and buy an $800 sewing machine. OR call ship shades and spend $200 for new curtains. Then I have $600 to put toward something else. What would you do?
