Has anyone added curtains on the 29.5 specifically? How did you manage the side/front two that curve around? What about the two top/front windshields? Has anyone tried those Zarcor Boat Shutters (seen at the boat show)? Thanks, Jane

Fun, easy, winter project
We added them to our 29.5. My wife made paper patterns, then found some matching material to go with the cushions. She put in a 1” hem all around the edge and used ½” diameter velcro dots sown to hem in about 6 places (more or less). The dots had a peel off adhesive on them and we stuck them to the interior hull on to match the curtain. They work great. We also made a screen that fits in the companionway using the same method. The curtain project cost about $10.00 and the screen was about the same (had to buy a whole roll of screen). In the morning we roll them up and stow them in the locker next to the forward berth. I have a Hunter 28 and I am looking to install some curtains as well to keep the strong Florida sun off of the teak and new interior. I have been doing some research and I have found a couple of great pages. I saw some really nice blinds on the new Benateaus and Hunters at the boat show and set out looking for them to buy online, but to no avail. Instead I found a great project link http://kindred-spirit.net/upgrades/shades.html with how to make them using Home Depot parts. Not a bad idea. Also, I have heard a lot of people talking about using RV curtain hanging parts and found some stuff on http://www.campingworld.com/browse/categories/index.cfm?deptID=4

Don't buy pre-made

The curtains were pleated just like the ones Terrance shows on his web site. There are two problems with our: 1. The curvature of the hull means the curtains do not hang straight up and down. After a while the kinds started sagging out. Now they bow away from the windows. 2. Because they are pleat they collect all kinds of stuff and have to be vacuumed constantly. We spent several hundred dollars on the kit. My advice is to go with Joe's plan for now. But if you really want pelted shades then do one first and watch it for a season. Replacement Blinds from OceanAir
I don't know if this will help, but I recently replaced my OLD and TATTERED curtains with some blinds from OceanAir. I saw them mentioned in a recent issue of Blue Water Sailing, and took a chance. Being in Mexico, I thought maybe I should get just one first, but I decided to take the plunge. They are EXCELLENT, if pricey. The twenty inch long model fits the Grey 7/15 port, and the slightly shorter (18 inches?) blind fits the Grey 5/12. The horizontal pleats go over the edges of the ports and the dogs very nicely, and I hook the bottom between the lower edge of the lens and the dogs. Works great, looks great, and they were easy to install. I had been looking for other solutions for about two years, and could come up with nothing that I liked, including custom copies of the originals. These will really up-date the look of an older book.

The curtains then have elastic to hold them up against the portlites. We usually need to replace the elastic every two-three years. I suppose if you have windows that are in the deck and expected a pleated curtain to stay up against the cabin ceiling, it is probably not going to work.

Steve, Ours look like a profile of a guy with a bad beer gut. But, in all fairness, our boat is 6 hours south of here in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico and we only get to her once or twice a month.
