submarine, house batteries

How long can you run your laptop before recharging (the house batteries, not the laptop)? Do you leave your laptop on to track your course, or do you plot your course, put it in standby, then check it occasionally? Thanks, Kevin

I use a HP with a Centrino cpu running on a 150 watt inverter while I'm moving. I don't worry too much as we have been on the hook for 3-4 days with the refridge running using lights to read, and some music on the stereo (the laptop isn't running all this time), and I can still start the engine using the house bank (I have a starting battery). My house bank is 4 Trojan T105's configured as 2 12v batteries which I combine using the 1-B-2-Off switch. Totoal amp hours (new) 450. They are in their third season.

Our house bank consists of four 6 volt golf cart batteries wired in two pairs with 400 amp hours of total capacity. We have a Balmar 110 amp alternator. If we're out cruising we pretty much leave the computer on all the time for navigation. Winds tend to be fickle in the Pacific NW, and if you're trying to get from point A to point B in a reasonable period of time, most days you end up motoring at least part of the time which has been plenty to keep our house bank charged up. mouse /GPS conflicts
Caveat: Not a computer genius posting! However .....if I recall correctly, a buddy of mine was having the same problem with his setup a couple of years ago. Again, IIRC, it turned out to be... (grossly over-simplified here) ..... the computer seeing the two serial devices as the same thing and therefore trying to respond to input from both at the same time. I believe it was resolved by different "port assignments" in the operating system. It was definitely a system software though, not environmental. Now when my tillerpilot started darting all over the place while motoring home in the rain, that was environmental! (leaking past the rubber button seals onto the pcb) cheers all Craig
