Seems to be a great lack of current information concerning the condition of the AICW. Lots of talk about insufficient funds, but no updated information. Googled and searched exhaustively however, the latest seems to be May of 2004. The Waterway Ham Radio net is another recourse to be investigated tomorrow. Any viable links appreciated. Frank

SHHH..

Don't get this started again. There was a computer brawl last week about this subject. Some guy even accused me (I think it was me) of being a liberal! Boy was he off-base! Anyhow, I think somewhere in the mayhem a little info actually got out. Scroll down a bit or check the archives.

I wasn't around last week so didn't see the information you suggeted. Looked in the archive before posting, but didn't check the current posts. What a laugh those posts are. Really great comments. Anyhow, I hope all that read those windward posts have good rigging. Frank

This is actually a good question...

and on point for those of us heading south soon. Disregarding about all the bull@#$% re funding, lack thereof, etc., what is the current condition for heading south? Is Lockwood Folly now passable for sailboats (I think it has been at high tide)? Any other trouble spots folks can point to?

Fernandina Florida Area

Others have chimed in about the north Florida area, specifically Fernandina Beach Inlet area. This area has been subject to alot of shifting sands and groundings as I for one experienced a few years ago. I would be cautious not only through this area but Georgia (Savannah south to Cumberland Island as well). If your draft is over 5 feet favor the high tides. Safe Journey Bob

Savanna to St. Johns River (Jacksonville)

Done a few runs along this stretch (Savannah to Fernandina) in the last few months. No problems. Six foot draft. The major problems appear to be north of Charleston in the Corps of Engineers Wilmington district. Lockwoods Folly being one of them but I haven't gone through this stretch since 2003. The stretch from Charleston to Ft. Lauderdale is ok. except the small section just south of the Edisto River which can be a bit shallow (6-7 ft. at low water) in spots. I saw a dredge in there in June 04 but don't know if they were just sitting or about to dredge that section. Also the stretch through Jekyll Is. only has 5 1/2 ft. or so, low water spring tides. Just my luck went through at dead low last June.

Intracoastal Folly

Following the Intracoastal Folly: What is happening to keep the waterway running By Chris Nelson It would seem the concerns of the cruisers are finally making headway in the dredging of the ICW. Small portions of funds have finally been allotted to keeping the waterway open. Although it is a start, please make sure to follow the news on the waterway. There are still many areas that need to be improved to keep not only commercial traffic running but also private boating. Storm Note

This time last year, I sailed south from Corpus to Port Isabel with no problems. However, since so many of these posts have to do with FL, in light of recent and upcoming FL storms, I thought I'd throw this in: We got to Port Isabel just in time for Erika. Going back north from Port Isabel, we had one instance where we ran aground while definitely between bouys. Luckily, there was a fisherman nearby who pulled us off. He said that after a storm we need to be careful of two things in the ICW: 1. Bouys tend to move due to the storm. 2. Shoaling can be caused by the storm.
