Is there any reason that your reef cringle can not be used in place of your cunningham cringle? What would be the differance in performance? I do not race . Thanks

There's a reason they have two different names. The cunningham is well below the first reef. You could try, but approximately the bottom third of you luff would not be helped if you use the reef cringle.

Has nothing to do with race or cruise, there's only one sail shape: the right one for the given wind speed and course.

The cunningham cringle is usually at approx. 3%+ 'up the luff' from the gooseneck .... so that when fully 'pulled' the cringle will/can almost contact the boom at maximum (burst) strain.

If the first reef is pulled (like as with a cunningham) it will only move the draft forward *above* the cringle .... and will probably *increase* the amount of draft and reposition it 'more aft' at below the area of the first reef. Mathematical 'net balance' will be 'zero change' in CE ..... and the sail will because of the 'very odd' shape become quite 'squirrely'.

The cunningham (or a sliding gooseneck) is probably the 'best' means to adjust the position of maximum draft in the ***bottom sections/panels*** of a mainsail. For draft position changes/adjustment near the top panels, use the halyard.

I don't have a cunningham cringle on my main. Instead I have a 'floating tack' on a loose footed sail. The tack cringle is attached to the cunningham control line. When eased, the tack rises in the mast slot. As the cunningham control line is tensioned the bottom slide on the main is pulled down to the gooseneck.
