Cunningham on O'Day 34 - 35

Has anyone rigged a cunningham on an O'day 34 or 35. I wondered what configuration you used. How you attached it to the cringle on the main, and more importantly where you attached it the gooseneck, mast, etc. Also did you use a 1:2 or 1:4 purchase and how it is working. Dave: I'm not sure how to respond to this. When I have an occasion to tighten up the luff, I just run a line through the lower reefing cringle and tie it off to the rams head. No special rig needed. Are we talking about the same thing? S/V Suspicion O34

Cunningham or Downhaul?

My O'Day 27 has a gooseneck fitting that can move up and down the mainsail track, so I have a Cunningham that attaches to a bail on the forward end of the boom and pulls the gooseneck (and boom) down to tighten the luff. If your gooseneck is stationary on the mast, you can rig any line through a cringle above the tack as a downhaul. I have seen several sails with a heavy-duty downhaul cringle (reinforced like a tack) about 6-8 inches above the tack but without that, the first reefing tack or maybe a slide/car cringle can be used. I would be very cautious about using a car cringle because mine are not reinforced as well as a tack (they don't have to be because my Cunningham pulls down on the boom). Rigging the line with a 1:2 or higher purchase will make it easier to tighten. Remember, pulling down will be easier than trimming the halyard because the downhaul has the weight of the sail working with you. Tightening the halyard is harder because you are working against the weight of the sail. Cunninghams and downhauls perform the same function, which one you use depends on if your gooseneck fitting can move up and down. Good luck.

Not really

The first reefing cringle is a considerable distance above the boom. Using it to tighten the luff takes too much of the sail out of service. The Cunningham cringle is just a few inches above the boom. Its use thus does not greatly impact the shape of the sail along the boom.
