Cumberland Island Area

Here's to hoping the area gets all the rain out of its system this weekend so we get some sunshine for Memorial Day weekend!

We're spending that weekend at a friends river house with access to a small runabout -- any recommendations for places to check out by boat?

go to St Mary's and snoop around ...interesting little place......the phrase ...See ya in the funny papers originated there ....also kings bay sub base is there but security may be very tight .......enjoy your stay

Cumberland Island is in Georgia while the Cumberland River is in Kentucky, where are you going?

Based on the screen grab, he's going to Cumberland Island, Ga. Locals refer to the ICW as 'the river' as it is part of the inland river system in south Ga.
And speaking of the screen grab...

Cumberland Island is neat. Wildlife has not been hunted in over 100 years . we had deer, coon, others, totally ignore us. Also concur on St. Mary's. neat little town. Anchored off, and toured.

Cross the river and visit Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island FL. It is a really neat little town with good restaurants, a little shopping and lots of pre-civil war history and old homes.

As others have mentioned, Cumberland Island itself, St. Marys and Fernandina Beach are definitely worth visiting. Not sure where your friends river house is, but if it's on the south end of Cumberland Island and you don't mind a little bit of a run you can run down to Nassau Sound. There is a nice sandbar at the mouth of Simpson creek where you can anchor/beach, swim and explore the north end of Little Talbot Island. If you are north of Cumberland Island, you can run up to Jekyll Island (which isn't quite my cup of tea, but some like it) or keep going further north and check out St. Simons Island (which I like better, but again your mileage may vary.)

Awesome, I'm half-marathon training so I'll try to sneak in some scenic runs while I'm out there!

And thanks for the replies, everyone. I'll definitely add all of those places to the list. My friend grew up in the area so I'm sure he has a list of his own, I was just doing some searching to get psyched.

The screen grab is from the Navionics app -- my ipad decided it had to update everything on it, haha. The new weather feature was a really nice surprise when I opened the app up!

We loved the park on Cumberland Island. As we anchored out we dinked ashore with our dog the ranger looked at us and said "oh , you must have your own boat." No dogs allowed on the ferry. Check for ticks.
