Been invited to crew on a boat going to Cuba. Has anyone had experience as to problems cruising in Cuban waters or problems going ashore? Am also searching for any related links for sailors in this area. Thanks HW

Do it

Just got back from Cuba. We were in a race from St Petersburg to Marine Hemmingway on our P420 and it was just great. The people of Cuba were friendy. No one our group had any problems. There some books that cover all you need to know. I do not remember the title and I loaned to a friend but I got it from Blue Water Charts and Books. You paper work from USCG and a Customs sticker for the boat. I would get a book and read up on it. If you want to see some pictures that I took go to zippideedu.com and look under Cuba and for the start of the race its Cuba Race. We are planing to go agin next year but will stay longer and see more. Bob Petersen

the enemy within..

We crewed to Cuba two years ago and had a wonderful time. The Cuban Government was pleasant to deal with and the people were ALL very friendly. Upon our exit, the Cuban's main concern was to protect us from our own Government (after making sure there were no "extra" crew members on board). I found the U.S. Government to be the pain, not the Cubans.

Havana Cup

I have friends who crewed before in the Havana Cup from Tampa to Havana, which the US shut down last year, but the site has some great links on Cuba travel. I monitor it since I'd love to enter the race if they do it again. I hear the Cubans are most hospitable, just follow the US guidelines to the letter and DON"T bring back any cigars! http://www.havanacup.com/ Chris Rice S/V Sea Dawg 40 Hunter

Move to Cuba

AS A CUBAN, I THANK MY PARENTS AND THE US GOVERNMENT TO HAVE GIVEN ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW UP IN A FREE COUNTRY. YOU THINK OUR GOVENMENT IS A PAIN? CUBANS DO NOT HAVE THE FREEDOM TO OWN A BOAT OR SAIL FREELY LIKE US AMERICANS. I SUGGEST YOU MOVE TO CUBA. ONLY THEN WILL YOU REALY APPRECIATE OUR GOVERNMENT AND THE FREEDOMS WE ENJOY.

Ithaka

The log of Ithaka is on the Cruising World website. They went through there in February/March timeframe. It was a very interesting article. I follow their progress every Friday.

Mr. Sanchez

I'm not a left-wing crazy, but this subject is a pet peeve of mine so I have to reply. I think almost everyone here respects and appreciates the freedom we have, even though the government is trying to take it back little by little. However, if we can give China normal trading status and if we can feed and negotiate with North Korea, two of the most repressive regimes on the planet, then we can darn well trade and have normal relations with every small country in our own hemisphere, even Cuba. There is no reason any of us should not be able to travel there at any time we wish. You can go to China at anytime. Freedomm is being allowed to make one's own choices even if it's unpopular. Unfortunately a relatively small population of anti-Castro zealots have somehow been able to obtain a degree of political influence that far exceeds its size and the politicians are cowards for not addressing the issue.
