We are Paul and Liz (Brits) who have recently purchased a CT 41 which is currently in San Diego. We are heading out to the States at the end of April 2006 to commence our 2/3 year trip back from California, via the Panama to Spain. We've had three trips out to our boat 'Aphrodite' this year but can't wait until we take up permanent residence! Our main reason for posting is to ask about our mizzen. The one major change we would like to make to our CT is to raise the mizzen boom (and shorten it slightly) in order to create a safe 'head' clearance in the cockpit. We would like to hear from anyone who has made this change to their CT, and also how much it has compromised the boat's sailing performance (if at all)? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The mizzen link

Hiya and a great new year to you!,sounds like its going to be!!. Sorry not a CT 41 owner but admire these classic looking boats. Have been giving a lot of thought to a ketch rig over a sloop rig for my Roberts 36 currently in build, hence the reason im looking on this site, my thoughts are is that your boat is a 'cruising boat' and her ketch rig gives her great flexibility, next time you sail her, if conditions allow for full set of sails, put a first reef in the mizzensail, and note the differance, if its negligable, raise and shorten the boom, and have the sail cut to suit. So what do i know?, well im no expert but have sailed ketch and sloop on the same Roberts hulls as mine, yes the sloop performed better to windward, but the ketch i sailed on off, StKitts, her Ozzy skipper never bothered with the mizzen up and the boat made good speed, some skippers i have spoken with suggest a slight trim aft of some ballast, it compensates for the tendancy of the bow to dig in a little more on a mizzensailless ketch the mainmast being further forward.in the case of the Ozzies boat, meant moving a few cases of the amber nectar!!!. Hope this helps, M,Gray. Good sailing!

How about about a bimini too...

I too am looking at a ct41 and would need a bimini installed as the heat here in Nicaruaga gets an old man down.... to raise the boom makes since. Funny, this boat being designed by Bill Garden as the 1st sailboat I was on was a rebuilt double ender that our seascout group brought back to life and our Skipper turned to Bill Garden (then in Seattle) to layout the rig and keel for us, and guess what it was a ketch also. Let's chat....

Hi Paul & Liz Could you please send me your email so we can chat. I would like to invite you folks to stop by our town on your way down to Panama, we are just 30 miles north of Costa Rica and have a fine place to stay and enjoy some good times two. My wife and I retired here 3 years a go. Sold our Ericson 38 in Texas 2 years ago and am now trying to get a CT41 down here to use with the youth as I have started a "Sea Scout Ship" These Kids are the most and are eating it up but we need a boat, and I am trying to get one to sail down. I think the CT41 being a big old heavey is just the thing for us here in teaching and training the kids. Looking forward to hearing from you soon. email rhewitt@intergate.com and go to our website for pictures (instant load) www.pbase.com/rhewitt and see our life style in the tropics. Ralph
