We are Paul and Liz (Brits) who have recently purchased a CT 41 which is currently in San Diego. We are heading out to the States at the end of April 2006 to commence our 2/3 year trip back from California, via the Panama to Spain. We've had three trips out to our boat 'Aphrodite' this year. Our main reason for posting is to ask about our mizzen. The one major change we want to make to our CT is to raise the mizzen boom (and shorten it slightly) in order to create a safe 'head' clearance in the cockpit. Are there any CT owner's out there who have done this? If so we would love to hear from you regarding the impact it may have had on the sailing performance? Thanks

You may want to reduce the forward sail also.

Depending on how much mizzen sail you remove you may want to cut down the forward sail area to keep the boat in balance. Good luck on your journey.

Liz and Paul, Can't advise on your mizzen boom. However would suggest you read up on heading out into the Carribean from Panama. You'll be going against strong prevailing winds and currents and a lot of fetch that makes this an extremely rough ride. Suggest you read Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes which I'm sure is available in the chandlery on this site. Hope this helps. Gary Wyngarden S/V Wanderlust h37.5

mizzen mods

Hello Liz and Paul - I used to own a Formosa 51 ketch which is similar to your CT41. I don't think you'd have much trouble raising the boom by a small margin and reducing the sail area. Although you are raising the center of effort (not a positive), the reduced sail area, along with the fact that the mizzen is a relatively small sail on a relatively heavy boat, I think you'd be fine. It should be a simple modification but I'd test sail the boat as in varied conditions before you commit to it. Just my thoughts - keep us posted on your preparations! Trevor
