I am in the process of doing the bottom. What will happen if I place the second coat on before the 16 hrs that interlux instructs to do?

Longer drying time

2 thin coats are better than 1 thick coat. You might get uneven drying, but it kinda depends on the time between coats. A few hours on the back end isn't going to hurt anything, but if you put on one coat, wait a couple hours to where you can touch it and put on the second, you may have problems. Interlux is a good product with a good track record when applied according to spec. I use Interlux Ultra and it works great for me, but I wait a day between coats.

Don't chance it....

I have done quit a few bottoms working in a boat shop. If you try to beat it , you will loose. The only way you may beat it, is if the temp is very high. I would not try to beat it by more than a couple of hours. There should be a hot line on the can. I have talked to interlux about a couple of there products and they are very helpful. r.w.landau

2 THICK COATS ARE BEST!

Bob: I agree w/ R.W. that you really shouldn't try to shave any time between coats of paint. It needs time to cure and dry in order to work effectively. As for the thickness of the paint coats, if you are going to haul every year, you can easily get by with 2 thin coats of contrasting colors. If you (like a lot of us!) try to get more than one season per paint job, then 2 good thick coats are the only way to go. Then, take whatever paint is left over and put yet another coat along the waterline where surface friction is greatest. BTW, don't let the yard talk you into not moving your stands and instead slapping paint on after the boat is in the sling. You will definitely NOT be happy (trust me on this one...OOPS!) Good luck and smooth sailing! Tim Leighton (S/V "Magic")
