I’ve been a subscriber of Cursing World Magazine for many years. When my subscription came up for renewal I choice not to continue my subscription. Well the magazine continued to come for a couple of months. Many renewal notices followed this from Cursing World, which I ignored. I was then notified by mail that the account was turned over to a collection agency. I contacted them by phone and they assured me that the account was closed and there would be no further action. Well 30 days later more notices regarding collection. This time I called and I’m routed into a voice system with an option to cancel my subscription. I’m told by the system that my account is closed and they have no authority nor would they turn this information over to any credit burials. Well two weeks later I get a notice thanking me for renewing Cursing World. Today I received the January 2003 issue. What’s up? This feels like a big scam? Has anyone had this experience with a magazine publisher? Thanks,

I've had the opposite problem

I submitted a card to renew my subscription & have them bill me later. They stopped sending me my magazines! I now have to renew at a higher rate. It's only a few bucks, so I'm not going to sweat it, but I'm wondering who they're hiring in their accounting department!! Allen Schweitzer

Check your credit

If any company said they were turning your past-due account over to a collection agency, it's likely this info went into your credit history. Check with the credit bureaus (I think there are three in the USA, and they are legally obligated to release a credit report to you on what they have on you.) & get it removed if it showed up! (And make sure Cruising World knows about it -- a letter to them, cc: the Better Business Bureau, will get their attention.) Keep records of any correspondence, telephone call logs, etc. to back your claim. --Ron

Subscription agencies

The "Subscription Department" of most large magazines is often a subscription agency that is merely contracted with the magazine. CW is no exception. You're probably having problems with one of these agencies, not CW itself. It's unfortunate that this kind of crap can really damage a magazine's reputation. A note of caution that I had from CW itself: NEVER order a magazine from any other source than the magazine itself! Don't order at boat shows, through Publisher's Clearinghouse or any other kind of bulk mailing. Either use the card which is routed through the mag or call their 800 #. LaDonna

Subscriptions

I've received both Sail and Cruising World for years, and have never had a problem with them. However, in recent years Ive started getting subscription notices for them but from different publication distributors, not directly from the mags. My wife thought she was doing me a favor by renewing my subscriptions early for a savings but she didn't realise that they were trying to as I see it, "steal my subscription" from the mags and subsequently start purchasing my monthlies from them instead of the mag. If this is what's happening to you there's really no way to stop it except to carefully watch your renewal dates and pay close attention to what you get in the mail to make sure it's directly from the mag publisher. Fortunately , I caught the problem before we sent the check out. Hope this helps.
