Brian and "Boat Babe" (formerly known as "Steph")

Greetings to all of you patient readers out there! Please accept our profound apologies for the delay getting this installment up. Steph and I have been literally working double and triple shifts between our business and professional careers, and have literally had no time. It takes 4-5 hours to put one of these together, and we decided to force the issue on Saturday night to get this one done. Originally there was to be 10 parts to the series, but due to our schedules, there will only be nine. Part 8 has been condensed to help us get it online. We will do the best that we can to answer any questions that people post, but our time at the computer is limited right now, so you may have to wait a couple of days for a response. Thank you for all the E-mails, tips, and concerns... keep 'em coming! Our schedule should calm down at the end of August and we will be spending more time online then! Sincerely, Brian and "Boat Babe (formerly known as "Steph")

OMG what a ........

fish..Yeah, fish. I see the boat was healing a bit when the pic in the salon was taken. Or the gimbaled light is out of whack. Glad you put the info on about the boom vang. On our trip we used a preventer because the boom vang didn't work. On my boat, I don't even have a boom vang, and with two booms (I know, one is a forefoot or something or other, bear with me) I know I will have to get something to hold the booms down. In fact the other day we were wing on wing on wing and the staysail shot up into the air and when I pulled it down, we had a much better go of it. Great pics of the cat too. Did Whiskers get seasick at all in the chop? Were there no stars out when you took the night shot? I bet it can get really dark if the clouds cover the sky. Don't forget the Perseids tonight! Talk about stars and such.

Well done!

Thanks so much for sharing your adventures with us. My beautiful wife and I are eagerly looking forward to taking our little sloop out for more than just a little day sailing, and you guys have been an inspiration. Od course, lovely photographs! The one of Steph sitting on the bow with the dolphins is amazing. Again, many thanks! Looking forward to more from the both of you. Cheers! Nick & Kell S/V "First Step"

Swim Platform

Brian, Sitting here at the helm of my desk, your account has allowed my mind to go sailing even while my fingers write a brief. Great photos! I don't think I've seen one of the stern of your boat. In the "after" you talk about the swim platform and rudder assembly and I get the idea from the photo. I'd love to see what it looks like attached. I don't think I've ever seen a set up like that. On my O'Day 25 the swim platform is the 3/4 inch rung of the folding ladder. Your's looks like quite a rig. Thanks again for letting us go along. Mike

Hi Brian and Steph. Would you be able to describe P.L. when you have time, brand, size, where do you stow away and how do you attach the outboard, i.e. davitt?

Thank You

For sharing a wonderful adventure. I have the impression you're newlyweds and can't think of a better bonding experience than what you did for yourselves. I can only hope you both know how very lucky and smart you two are. Fair winds and moonlit nights to the rest of your lives together.

who did the welding

aWho did the welding and cutting? I really need to redo my ladder aqrrangement and never thought of aluminum. What a great idea. I love the design too. In theory, you could sit on the swim platform and dangle your feet in the water and not get killed from co2 poisoning. I need to put up a radar platform too, and aluminum would work great. I'd rather incorporate a davit system on a arch for the rear before I did the swim platform though. But I would make the ladder longer. So, what kind of aluminum tubing? How did you bend it? What neat gun did you use to weld it with? Thanks for the trip too! AIt's look doable now on my 37'er, but boy so I need some work to it first, like a depth finder, etc. And where do you get dolphins for the bow? I was thinking of remote control ones. Drive the people up in CLeveland nuts if they saw dolphins swimming along the boat.

sailing in Cleveland

The season for sailing started a week or so ago. The temps have moderated to the low 80's and the humidity is back to normal, and that means very comfortable around here. The winds have picked up so that we can do hull speed, with shorts or bathing suit on, or naked if you dare, and again, be comfortable. We went out Sunday and were healing at 30 degrees and flying. Had a ball compared to the 2 to 4 knots in the early summer. A week ago I went out by myself to the crib (the water intake for part of Cleveland, located 3.5 miles straight out from my marina.) On the way in, the Browns had fireworks after their scrimmage. Really cool. Then the motor wouldn't start and the winds dies down to 2 knots or so, so I ghosted along and knew I wouldn't be able to make it in. So I anchored out on the lake for the night, and I was the ONLY boat on the lake, or so it seemed. I finally reset the sails around 2:00 when the wind picked up and made it in under sail, docking at around 5:30 to a beautiful sunrise. Sailing on the lake is great. Now reefs in these parts (there are in Buffalo and the East end, Toledo and the West end, and parts of Canada, the North end. We had a 1/8th inch tide, a current of about nothing running West to East, and mostly 30 to 50 feet of deep water. It's a blast, but only lasts for a few short weeks. If you want to come up and spend a few days on the boat, or a weekend, let me know. The boat is in need of a few things, but mostly we go out and come in, so a lot of stuff is unnecessary.

most likely all three

Most likely all three days, and probably Friday as well. Well Friday night anyway. I haven't heard from the relatives yet, which is usually one day, maybe two. One day for sure with friends and coworkers. She is docked at Edgewater Marina, last dock, fourth boat in. For the air show I usually go to the West side, where the planes circle overhead before making a runway pass. Usually they wave, and the angles for pictures is pretty good. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and give us a few nice lake days, no 7 footers.
