Hi all, Anyone recently sail to Sag Harbor, NY (Eastern Long Island)? I am trying to plan a short trip over there this Aug. for a few days with our Cataina 30 and wanted to know what the set-up there is like- how are the anchorages (if any)? Any moorings? Marinas? I would prefer to stay at a Marina if possible. Thanks and appreciate the feedback! Rob

Several Times

Sag Harbor is one of our favorite spots on the south fork of Long Island. There is a nice theater there, and loads of good restaurants. The place is buzzing on summer nights with tourists, not a quiet scene. I have never stayed at a Sag Harbor marina because the anchorage is so large and the holding ground is so good. We have sailed in on a July 4th weekend and found acres of space. It's so darn satisfying to spend a weekend sleeping in the Hamptons without paying anyone! We have been spun around the compass in that anchorage without budging an inch. I've never seen anyone have trouble setting an anchor there. There are moorings, but as far as I know they are private. There are a couple of marinas right in town, and they usually have transient slips -- probably because the anchorage is such a good alternative, it's tough to compete with free. Almost as good as free is the town-owned dock, which has about 20 transient slips with water and shore power at very low rates for the region. As you might imagine, reservations will be necessary well in advance. Check the maptech guide for the phone number. Make sure you have an up-to-date chart, some of the bouys in and around the harbor have changed in the past couple of years. There are some rocks just north of the anchorage, so don't go in unless you are sure. The first time I sailed to Sag Harbor, I was confused by the bouy placements and hailed the harbormaster. He was very helpful, and guided us in safely. Our favorite restaurant is the Sushi place right in the middle of town, I think its name is "San." Last time we were there we sat at a table right next to Julie Andrews. Ahh, only in the Hamptons. Paul sv Escape Artist h336 P.S. Rob, it's OK if you use my posting in your very attractive Blog. I just read your reply today to my posting on Greenport. P.S.S. What I want to know, is can I get my 4.5-foot draft sailboat into Mattituck Inlet?

Sag Harbor is Great

Sag harbor is great and my wife's favorite place to go for a weekend sail, plenty of room to anchor just west of the break water jetty. I have never stayed at the town slip's except to tie up the dinghy when we go into town for great places for dinner ice cream and walking around and looking at the rich and famous boats. Also agree check the charts for rocks,I was out at greenport this weekend and saw the new docks they built but not done or open yet for over nite stays maybe soon they are really nice, greenport is also a nice place to go. nick

Also try Coecles or Shelter Island

Sag Harbor can be busy during the summer. You may want to try Shelter Island Harbor (across from Greenport) or Coecles Harbor. Coecles is a little tight getting in at low tide, but is very quiet. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Sag Harbor Yacht Club

We stayed there for a few days two years ago. The facilities are very good, and the location is close to the heart of the town. Make your reservations early, as it books up early for summer(particularly the weekends).

Thanks for the responses!

Thanks everyone for the information on Sag Harbor. Although I would rather swing on the hook we may need to get a reservation at the town or yacht club facility - this summer brings along our newest addition to the boat: our 5 month old son!! (by Aug.). PS To:paul McGhee Thanks, appreciate the feedback on the site. as far as Mattituck Inlet - you will have no problem with a 4.5 draft. I sailed my 5 ft draft C-30 right to the end of the inlet. There is an anchorage there but I had a tough time holding in the mud. I did not have the right anchor (had a fluke at the time). Let me know if you need any other info on the North Fork.
